Alejandro Amenabar is a young, talented and a tremendous director that likes to discover and experiment. He is motivated to his career, loves what he does and no doubt pulls it off every time. His movie “The Others” might have some similarities to the movie “The Sixth Sense”. It can also considered to be a combination of “The Innocents” and “The Haunting” but Alejandro has mixed it up with new ideas of his own and interesting twists and turns in the movie making it more creepy and scary. The directors of “The Others” Alejandro Amenabar has won 43 awards & has 28 nominations.
The story of “The Others” is about a woman named Grace played by Nicole Kidman has recently shifted to a huge mansion in an island that is almost deserted. She lives there with her two children, Alakina Mann as Anne and James Bently, who played Nicolas. Anne is the oldest sister who bullies around her younger brother Nicolas. They both have a disease; they are allergic to sunlight by reason of which Grace has to keep the curtains closed at all times to keep her children from getting hurt. The disease the children have is an actual disease known as xeroderma pigmentosum. It is a very rare disease as only thousands of people are suffering from this it in the whole world. Because of that Grace is not afraid of the dark and is a confident, mature woman waiting for her husband, who is a soldier to come back from the World War II. This way she is the only guardian for her children.
Soon the spooky mansion, the family is living in starts manifesting the haunts and bad scenarios it has kept with it for a long time. This is the place where the movie gets scarier and attention-grabbing. Not to forget the mind blowing performance of Fionnula Flanagan who under a passive and flimsy appearance can easily become unsettling. The end of the movie was awesome, nobody would have guessed it. That is why people find “The Others” different from other ghost movies.
This film is yet another horror film that proves that a movie does not need big budget special effects to make a remarkable impact on the audience and to be a huge hit on the box office. This film is frightening, and it only had a $17million budget and it earned every cent it made. A highly recommended movie that’s ending will shock you and keep you on your toes till the end. For those looking for something special to "sink their ears" into, The Others, may just sufficiently provide the entertainment they are searching for. Composer/ Screenwriter/Director Alejandro Amenábar have certainly caught the attention of Hollywood, and with the effort he put into this movie.
