“With great power comes great responsibility” – Does the tagline ring bells? It is not possible that it doesn’t. The famous movie Spiderman directed by Sam Raimi was released in 2002 making every kid and adult its heart throbbing fan. The movie was super cool with great special effects and storyline and of course how we can forget Toby McGuire who played the leading role in the movie.
Spiderman a movie released in 2002 about the legendary superhero whose comics we read and cartoons we saw. The film was the first Spiderman movie in the series directed by Sam Raimi, brilliantly written by David Keopp and starring Toby McGuire as Spiderman, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson and Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn / Green Goblin
The film starts with Peter Parker (Toby McGuire) being bitten by a spider that is genetically altered. After misusing and taking his powers for fun which indirectly causes the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter Parker, the nerdy boy of the high school realizes that the gift he got is not just for fun and games as with great power comes great responsibility. That is when he turns into this superhero that fights crime in the streets of New York. Meanwhile, Peter Parker wants to win over Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) who he has loved since he was little and battles the villainous Green Goblin, who is the father of Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn.
After being stuck in development hell for nearly 25 years, the film was released on May 3, 2002 to good reviews from critics, went on to break box office records, and became the highest grossing film of 2002. The success of the film led to two sequels, Spiderman 2 and Spiderman 3.
After the tragic incident of September 11, 2001 in United States, Sony recalled teaser posters which showed a close-up of Spiderman's face with the New York skyline including, prominently, the World Trade Center towers reflected in his eyes. The movie's original trailer, released in 2001, featured a group of bank robbers on their getaway in a helicopter, which Spiderman catches in a giant spider-web between the two towers of the World Trade Center. The trailer was pulled after the events of September 11, 2001, attacks and can be found on the internet.
The BBFC gave Spiderman (2002) a ‘12’ certificate in June, 2002 before releasing it on the British theatrical preview. Due to Spiderman's popularity with younger children, this prompted much controversy. The BBFC defended their decision, arguing that the film could have been given a '15'. Despite this, North Norfolk and Breckland District Councils, in East Anglia, changed it to a 'PG', and Tameside council, Manchester, denoted it a 'PG-12'. In late August, the BBFC relaxed their policy to '12A', leading Sony to re-release the film.
