In Christianity it is generally believed that baptism favors the believer with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Since this is a very important occasion in the life of every Christian, the baptismal ceremony focuses very much on the celebrants and their new status within the Christian community. Of course, not every denomination within Christianity sees eye to eye with respect to this occasion, and customs and celebrations vary widely. Yet most denominations will agree with one another that this joyous occasion calls for a party, baptism gifts, and congratulatory cards.
If you denomination practices infant baptism, you will be awed by the many wonderful baptism gifts that are available for these little tykes. Since this practice mostly takes place within the Catholic faith, it is not surprising that many of the baptism favors revolve around the holy family, angels, and the Madonna. There are of course also the little Bibles, engraved with the child's name and date of baptism, which make for a wonderful keepsake as the child grows up and embarks on its own way toward holy living with her or his very first Bible. For those who prefer to give the parents a keepsake, the most popular baptism gifts are the baby rosaries which come in a variety of colors and are engraved with the little one's name, birth date, and date of baptism.
If a child is older when she or he is baptized, adults will like to give the young one something useful, such as a child's rosary made of sturdy wood beads. Children will be able to practice their prayers and use the beads just like the adults do.
Of course, many denominations also baptize adults, some exclusively so. When an adult is making this important step it is always a momentous occasion and usually takes a lot of prayer from the family of Christians. Many people feel that baptism gifts in this case should be very personal and spiritual, and when they consider what to give, they will often keep in mind the person's favorite Bible characters, highlights of the conversion process, and other important data.
Some such baptism gifts will center on the people who helped the celebrant to recognize his or her need for Christ, and framed photos of the group of believers are not an unusual gift. To add a personal touch, many will ask for the frame to be engraved with the name of the people, perhaps a favorite Scripture reference, as well as the date of the baptism. Others have chosen to commemorate this day with an engraved plaque or even a wall tile that can be permanently affixed to the wall in the home. Another wonderful idea is a study Bible with concordance which will set the new Christian on the correct course of personal Bible study.
Yet did you know that presents are not only given to the celebrant but also to the minister who is performing this important rite? As a matter of fact, at times the celebrant will donate something to the church family, such as a book for the reading room, a toy for the children's church, or even something bigger that will commemorate her or his addition to the church family.
