The Lost Boys - The Ideal Horror Movie

Added: 11/08/2007

The Lost Boys is an American horror film made in 1987 about a group of young Californians who must fight a gang of teenage vampires. The movie stars Jason Patric, Corey Haim and Kiefer Sutherland. The movie has also a good number of co-stars that include Jami Gertz, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest, Edward Hermann, Alex Winter, Jamison Newlander and Barnard Hughes. The movie was directed by Joel Schumacher.

The Lost Boys begins with the displaying of Lucy Emerson, played by Dianne Wiest, and her two teenage sons Michael and Sam, who are in a move to live with the father of Lucy in Santa Carla, a small town in California. However, the city of Santa Carla is plagued by its multitude of problems that include motorcycle gang and also unexplained disappearances of the citizens of the city! Being a developing teenager Michael, the elder son of the two, gets involved with the motorcycle gang due to his attraction to Star, the only girl in the gang and the rivalry with the leader of the gang, David. From this moment The Lost Boys takes a new turn! However, having participated in some dangerous activities along with the gang such as motorcycle racing though the dense fog, one day Michael inadvertently drinks blood in the guise of wine after being fooled into thinking that the Chinese food containers of rice and noodles were in real terms maggots and worms! It is from this moment a complete volte-face in his personal traits becomes visible. Gradually, he starts depicting symptoms of vampirism! He sleeps throughout the day, becomes sensitive to sunlight and is reflection gets transparent. Michael spends his night with the motorcycle gang throughout the night till one day he discovers that the entire gang is of the vampires. This gets revealed when they murder a group of teenagers! David explains to Michael that he must feed in order to survive, but Michael refuses to remain with them and leave the gang. His sudden decision to leave the gang makes the movie, The Lost Boys, even more realistic. From this moment Michael makes it a point to destroy this menace on the human society. With the help of Star, Laddie and his own brother Sam, who has recently joined up with two relatively inept vampire hunters Edgar and Alan Frog, Michael begins his new venture to find and kill the head vampire. However, this becomes really difficult as it is not clearly known who the real leader is! Sam and the Frog brothers try desperately that Lucy's boyfriend Max is the leader of the vampire gang, but their tests do not succeed. But towards the end of the movie, The Lost Boys, it becomes evident that Max is their leader. Now then why there was the failure of the vampire test? It did not succeed since Michael had invited Max into the house! However, throughout the movie the desperate and gallant of a group of young boys has been revealed. The boys battle the vampires, killing all of them except Max. Since Max remains intact, for a temporary phase they come to the conclusion, perhaps Max is not the leader! Meanwhile David, who ha a conventional tussle with Michael does not like the other vampires, who had violent deaths. On the contrary, the death of David was quite peaceful and there was also the involvement of bright white light. This has been explained by the two Frog brothers, to their study, no two vampires die the same. Now, as the movie progresses and Max is about to bite into the neck of Lucy, the mother of the young duos, Grandpa of the two drives his jeep through the wall of the house and sends a fence through Max's heart! But even after this Grandpa remains casual and getting one of his rot beers from the refrigerator says, "One thing about living in Santa Carla I could never stomach……….. All the damn vampires," including he has known much more of the paranormal activities in the entire area than anyone suspected!

The Lost Boys' performance has been well at the box office grossing over $32 million – quite a commendable achievement, especially for a R-rated horror movie, in the late 80's. The Lost Boys also bagged the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film in 1987.
