October will at all times be the most important month of the year for breast cancer foundations and charities. It will always be the month that people remember to put on their pink breast cancer bracelets and ribbons and it certainly is a wonderful month for fundraising activities. The money that is raised is absolutely fundamental in winning this combat against the atrocious disease.
However, the population must be attentive to the fact that if people only acknowledged cancer awareness in October and forgot about it during the other eleven months of the year, we would all be in trouble. Cancer foundations and societies depend on the kindness, compassion, dedication and devotion of the population all year round. It is fundamental to keep the battle going and to never give up.
Many of us will be touched by breast cancer in one way or another. Cancer awareness will strike when a person is diagnosed or has a friend or relative that is struggling with the disease. Almost everyone knows someone who has had to personally go into this battle. Whether that person is a co-worker, a neighbor, or is that woman that we all know at our local grocery store.
Cancer awareness is a key element in winning this battle. We all hear about the importance of doing self checks, but not enough people are following through. Early detection is the paramount method of surviving breast cancer. When performing self checks, a person can detect early symptoms and once going to their doctor, they will find that they will suffer fewer treatments and will have a tremendously higher survival rate than those people who do not catch the symptoms early.
One matter that must be stressed regarding cancer awareness is that breast cancer does not just appear in women. Although the number is far fewer, men need to also be concerned with breast cancer. A man has a chest, just as women do, of course and a man can find that he has breast cancer. One component of cancer awareness is to show men that this in no way should be thought of as women’s diseases. It is brutal, it can be swift and it is something that affects all of us; men and women alike.
Recent years of cancer awareness has brought out larger numbers of men who join and participate in cancer fundraising activities and this is vital. As more people join, others see this and they in turn join. If everyone will keep up their positive attitudes and never back down to this battle, eventually the entire nation can recognize the importance of cancer awareness and the battle can be won. It is the wish of all people who participate in cancer awareness that breast cancer will one day be eradicated and this is most definitely a possibility.
