Breast cancer charities really kick into gear in the month of October, which is the national breast cancer awareness month. Charities will hold fund-raisers and try to take this opportunity to educate the mass population. The more informed a person is, the better they will be prepared to deal with any issues and to deal with them correctly; thus giving themselves a better chance to live.
Walk-a-thons are one of the most popular ways a cancer charity will try to join together the population and to spread awareness. During October, almost every major city will have a cancer charity walk. Thousands of people will walk during this time, sponsored financially by friends, family and co-workers; they will get together and walk for miles; all in an effort to raise awareness and spread cancer education.
A cancer charity will try to dispel myths and false ways of thinking that can impair a person from getting proper checkups and treatment. For example, it was a false rumor that mammograms would spread cancer, if cancer was indeed present. A breast cancer charity will let the public know that this is absolutely not true. A mammogram, which is an x-ray of the breast, cannot possibly spread a cancer.
Cancer charity will also try to educate men when it comes to breast cancer. Men do get breast cancer, and for some reason there is a stereotype regarding this. It is seen as a women’s disease and men may not take notice of lumps in their chest. Men need to be aware that every year, approximately one thousand, six hundred men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and out of that number, approximately four hundred will die. Any cancer charity will educate on the need for men to check for lumps as often as women are asked to do.
The implementation of a cancer charity is working to stop any increasing number of breast cancer patients. The death rates are somewhat declining; this is because of better medical treatments and early detection of symptoms. A person can help a cancer charity by donating money, donating the volunteer time or joining the many fund-raising activities that are held thought-out the nation. With October being the breast cancer awareness date, this month may attract more people, but a cancer charity needs help all year round.
