The Sound Of Music is a movie made in 1965 that was directed by Robert Wise and starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. It is a movie about a family that escapes Nazi Germany to Switzerland. Sounds like your average run of the mill movie, right? The Sound Of Music was the biggest grossing film of its time and it continues to bring in box office returns from all over the world to this day. The Sound Of Music was so popular in its day that a theater in South Korea cut out all of the musical numbers in the film so that he could show it more often throughout the day and make more money from it. It isn’t known if those movie goers in South Korea realize that they missed out on the best parts of The Sound Of Music but this gives just one example of the mania caused by this movie when it was released. The movie takes place in Austria but it has never been very popular in Austria and Austrians that have seen The Sound Of Music in theaters have never seen the real ending. The Sound Of Music is the true story of the Von Trapp family and the governess that comes to stay with them. Eventually the governess and the father of the family, who lost his wife before the movie takes place, wind up getting married in a gala ceremony. The Von Trapp family was known for their singing and, even though it seems very hard to believe, many of the scenes in the movie are very historically accurate. One of the Von Trapp sisters even makes a quick cameo appearance in The Sound Of Music. In reality the Von Trapp family did not hike to Switzerland, they took a train to Italy and then flew to London and eventually wound up in the United States. Their story was a successful stage production for years before it hit the big screen in 1965.
The Sound Of Music made a great deal of money for nearly everyone involved with it. The only main person involved with the movie that did not make millions seems to be Julie Andrews herself whom only made her payoff $225,000 for her acting work. She had just come off of a successful performance in the Disney movie Mary Poppins and almost did not take the role in The Sound Of Music because she feared it was too similar to her role as Mary Poppins. She took the role and it solidified her reputation as the wholesome actress for kids movies for many years to come. She would later destroy that image when she appeared topless in the movie SOB but even then she was playing a kid’s movie star that wound up wanting to break her image. The Sound Of Music has grossed over $200 Million to this date and that is an incredible run for any movie. It won 5 Oscars, including one for best director, and was nominated for 5 others. None of the actors won an Oscar but Julie Andrews and Peggy Wood were both nominated for their performances. The movie went on to make it on to nearly every major top 100 movie list of all time and continues to bring in sales both at box offices around the world, on television, and through DVD sales.
The problems in making a film like The Sound Of Music were primarily physical. Many of the actors experienced some sort of physical injury during the making of the movie and Charmian Carr even performed one of the dance numbers with her injured ankle wrapped in gauze with make up on it to try and disguise it. In the end the movie was a huge success for everyone involved and stands today as one of the finest movies ever made.
