The Game Of Adoption In Media

Recently you have seen a lot about adoption in media and the stories of late have the potential to encourage, and disgust, anyone considering adoption. Hollywood celebrities using small children from other parts of the world as public relations tools just turns the stomach of nearly anyone watching. Why do celebrities today play this game of adoption in the media?
The concept of adoption is something that can be a beautiful thing for both the parents adopting the child for the child being adopted. Every child deserves to grow up in a home with loving parents that provide for that child and every child deserves the chance to enjoy a healthy and productive childhood. Lately there has been a lot about adoption in media and some of the stories that are coming out are enough to make the average person really wonder if maybe money should not be able to buy everything. Adopted children need a loving home, they do not need to be used as the center of some celebrities public relations stunt.

Most recently there has been the story of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Jolie and Pitt went on a spree of adoption in media and brought home a few children that they adopted from countries overseas. Some of the adoptions were very low key but others had made headlines all over the world and you begin to wonder if maybe these children are just being used by celebrities as attention grabbers. Pitt and Jolie now seem to be headed for a break up and what does that mean for the children they have adopted? Jolie and Pitt adopted 3 children and had one of their own and, in the end, the adoptions turned into circuses. Now that the pair seems destined to break up who will care for the children? That seems to be the biggest problem as Hollywood relationships are not known for their stability, or their longevity, so the notion of adopting several foreign children can seem very unfair to the children.

Probably the best example of how adoption in media is driven by personal greed is the story of Madonna. Madonna used her celebrity status to call attention to her attempts to adopt children from third world countries. This case of adoption in media was turned into a spectacle by Madonna as it seemed like she even went so far as to try and use the media to pressure the foreign countries into allowing her adoptions. If adoption is done truly out of love then it does not need to be adoption in media. If adoption is done for the good of the child, and not to further the potential parent’s entertainment career, then there is no need for the proceedings to be front page news. While it can be said that the media is as much to blame as Madonna for making her adoptions such a spectacle, it is still an idea born by Madonna and an attempt by Madonna to use adoption as a media stunt. Madonna is known for her use of the media, and for her corruption of the events around her for her own personal gain, and it makes you wonder why any country would allow this celebrity to adopt a child when she is perfectly capable of having a child of her own.

Maybe the most heart warming story of adoption in media is the story of Wendy’s restaurant founder Dave Thomas. Thomas was adopted as a child and right up until his death in 2002 he was one of the most famous celebrities that was known for trying to do some good work in the cause of adoption. He established the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and did tireless work for the cause of adoption all of his adult life.
