The Foster Care In USA

Added: 08/29/2007

Foster care in USA is a much needed system for countless children who are in dire need of caring and compassionate adults to take them into their homes and offer them what they have not been receiving. Becoming a foster parent is not an overly complicated process and it can bring amazing rewards to both foster child and foster parent.

There are countless children who are in need of foster care in USA. The children who are in need of caring and loving homes have found themselves in this situation by no fault of their own. The average age of a child who is in need of foster care in USA is between six and ten years old. The reasons of why a child is in need can vary greatly. In the majority of cases, the child has been removed from his or her home because of abuse and/or neglect. Some of the reasons for neglect are drug use by the birth parents and failure to provide a safe home. These children are often afraid and in need of comfort.
When a parent or parents are found to no longer be able to properly care for their child, welfare services will remove that child from the home for the main purpose of the safety of the child. In some cases, there will be siblings and the foster care systems will always strive to place siblings together in a foster home. The reasons that there are so many children in or in need of foster care are a more complicated situation, as the ultimate goal is to have the children adopted. There are obstacles that slow down the process of many adoptions and sadly, with children stuck in foster care in USA for so many years, they may reach older ages in which potential adoptive parents feel that the child is too old to be adopted. This is an issue that many feel should be addressed; older children are in need of love, comfort, safety, understanding, guidance and proper homing just as much as younger children.
There are also cases in which a foster child is simply not ready to be officially adopted. Because many of the children are coming from abusive and neglectful homes of their birth parents, some children are not emotionally ready to be adopted. For those children who are longing for parents to adopt them, the process may sometimes be a slow one, as the court systems will often drag out proceeding and birth parents can object to the action.
The process of foster care in USA and adoption are improving and agencies work to smooth out the process and instate changes that are beneficial to all. The adoption rates of children who are originally fostered are steadily climbing.
Any adult who is thinking about becoming a part of the foster care in the USA should know that a person does not need to own their own home in order to be a foster parent. Any residence must simply pass a safety inspection. In addition, foster parents are allowed to work. The foster care agencies will work with foster parents to find child care services while the parent works. In addition, foster parents are not financially responsible for any medical or dental care of the child; that is all provided by the state.
Deciding to become part of the foster care in the USA can be an amazing and rewarding experience. Offering love and safety to a child in need is a selfless and grateful act of kindness. Children who have not had the opportunity to experience what a real home can be can find themselves finally feeling safe. If given time to become familiar with his or her new home, foster children can be a welcomed and happy addition to a household.
