Casual clothing is the wave of the present. It is also a view of the past. Many of the clothes people wear today are designed to imitate the fashion of our past, “the retro look”. Of course who knows what the wave of the future will be, but right now the casual look is in. There are a few categories of casual clothing. Casual is generally defined as clothing that focuses primarily on comfort and self-expression, rather than conformity.
There are varying degrees of casual clothing. Smart casual is used to describe a suit or sports jacket and/or sweater. However, the word suit simply means a combination of clothing. In other words two pieces of clothing that go together such as a jacket and matching shirt or pants. Business casual is another degree of casual clothing. To be considered business casual the clothing must appear professional, while still allowing a person to look relaxed. Not too relaxed however, they must also appear neat and composed. The most common example of business or smart casual clothing is wearing khaki pants. Khaki’s are casual pants that can be worn for any occasion, professional or relaxed.
Another form of casual clothing, of course, is active wear. This includes any sort of clothing designed for sports activities or exercise. As you can guess this includes such things as tracksuits, shorts, t-shirts, or polo shirts and sports shoes. It is very common for people to wear such clothing without any intent to use them for exercise or sports. Many people have come to find that active wear can be more comfortable than other casual clothing. This only makes sense due to the fact that sports wear is designed to keep you cool when the weather is hot and warm when the weather is cold.
The most common type of casual clothing is everyday casual. For most people casual pants means blue jeans or khaki’s. Blue jeans and khaki’s allow you to wear whatever type of shirt you want. T-shirts, tank tops, polo shirts, and button down shirts can all be worn with either one. However, skirts and dresses can also be considered casual dress. Long flowing skirts with tank tops have become a very popular and comfortable clothing combination. Dresses have become more casual as well. The addition of sandals to a nice dress rather than high heels has helped make dresses less formal. Of course, don’t try to wear your prom dress or wedding gown with sandals. It just won’t work.
With casual clothing being so common there are some of us who still have a nice suit or dress hanging in the closet. I was taught as a child that if you go to an interview, it doesn’t matter if your applying to be a garbage man, you dress like you want the job. For just those occasions its good to keep a nice professional outfit in your closet. Of course just like children, some of us still want to play dress-up once in awhile. There’s no greater boost for you confidence than going out somewhere knowing you look good. The occasional outing that requires a suit and tie or dress and high-heels can be a lot of fun too. Nothing accentuates the beauty and shape of a woman’s legs like a pair of high-heels and a dress or skirt that shows off the calf muscles.
