The Constant Gardener (2005) Starring Award Winner Rachel WeiszStory taken from the novel The Constant Gardener, written by John le Carré is given a form of a movie directed by Fernando Meirelles who is a Brazilian director. The Constant Gardener is about a conspiracy which took place in Kenya where innocent people die in an explosive attack including the smart, intelligent wife of Justin Quayle. That is when he decides he will take this in to his hands to find the killers of his wife.
The story of The Constant Gardener is taken from a novel of the same name written by John le Carré. Fernando took a little bit of guidance before making this movie from John in person. He appreciates all the help he got from him. According to Fernando Meirelles, the novel was pretty complicated with a lot of characters, stories going on at the same time which was becoming harder for Fernando to show in a movie so he had to cut down a lot of characters and a lot of events to make The Constant Gardener simpler. He wiped out a lot of British characters which were in the novel and replaced some of the scenes shot in Nairobi streets instead. What motivated Merielles to direct this movie was that he will be able to explore and shoot in Africa. That is why more scenes are shot on the streets of Kenya.
The movie The Constant Gardener is about a married couple Justin Quayle played by Ralph Fiennes and his beloved wife Rachel Weisz as Tessa Quayle. The twist in the movie begins when Justin who is an English diplomat is sent to the embassy of Kenya; he takes his wife along with him. Tessa is an activist that fights for the rights of the poor people. Tessa is more involved in the matter and she decides to request help to Sandy, a Justin's friend, because she don't want to involve to her husband. Tessa is murdered in a trip to the north of Kenya and the authority try to accuse Arnold for a passion crime. Justin that is a fan of the gardening, decides to clarify the crime until the last consequences, this take him to uncover dirty arrangements of the powerful, who threaten him and they drive him to make the decision of taking off his life in the same place where they killed his dear wife. After this incident Justin who is a diplomat and a constant gardener by hobby must find out the killers of his wife. For that he takes the matter in his hands which is not just the murder of his wife but turns out to be a world wide conspiracy. He unravels the powerful mystery involving the members of the British High Commission and the involvement of a multi-billionaire pharmaceutical industry.
Fernando Meirelles has won an Oscar award, another 32 wins and 24 nomination including 14 wins for The Constant Gardener. The movie is an interesting, conspiracy based movie where a diplomat solves his wife’s murder which turns out to be so much more than that. The movie is filmed on the beautiful location of Berlin, London, Nairobi and numerous other parts of Kenya. Despite of its wins, people still felt disappointed in this movie compared to the novel due to the massive changes made by Fernando, the director of the movie.
