The Classic Movie Wild Strawberries

Wild Strawberries was a film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. This was a film that was made way back in late 1957. Smultronstallet was the original Swedish title that actually meant "The Wild Strawberry Patch". This was a film that Ingmar Bergman actually wrote while he was in the hospital. The characters depicted in this movie were part of Bergman's regular cast that he tended to use a lot.
This film follows a medical doctor who is driving with his daughter-in-law from Stockholm to Lund. The whole purpose of this road trip is so his daughter-in-law, Marianne, can receive her degree from Lund University. During this trip, the father, Isak Borg, goes through a lot of changes that make him reevaluate his life. He runs into a female hitchhiker, Sarah, who is traveling with her fiance. This to me does not seem a good start to a marriage for this young couple. Also during Wild Strawberries, they come across a fighting married couple. This couple reminds Isak of his own wife and the relationship that they have. Of course, the people that he meets are not the only things that play a factor in his decision to reevaluate his life. Wild Strawberries does a great job of showing the psychological struggle that he endures during this trip as well. Some of the mind games that are played with him are nightmares, certain day dreams, and dealing with the fact that he is becoming an older man. All these factors start taking a toll on our main star in this film. It is really a great movie that shows a man struggling with his own reality of becoming old and what he wish he would have accomplished during his life.

Wild Strawberries was a great film for Ingmar Bergman, and it grabbed him several awards. First it is worth mentioning that this film won the Golden Bear for Best Film. This award was presented at the Berlin International Film Festival. We cannot forget to mention that this movie also got Ingmar Bergman nominated for an Academy Award for Writing An Original Screen Play. By many critics, Wild Strawberries, was thought to be the best movie Bergman ever wrote. This is quite a honor for Mr. Bergman because Wild Strawberries was written extremely early in his career. There are not many directors or writers that can claim that they had one of their greatest masterpieces at the start of their career, instead of at the end. Wild Strawberries has also been listed on many must see movie lists and also included on the Vatican Best Films List. It was put on these lists for its unique way that it portrayed certain life values and midlife crisis's that everyone eventually goes through.

It is very refreshing to see a movie made that early in time that is still looked upon with fond eyes today. A lot of older movies kind of get lost below the radar and are forgotten about. Wild Strawberries will not become one of those movies. With such great actors and actresses such as Gunnar Bjornstrand, Bibi Anderson, and Ingrid Thulin; it is so easy to see why it became such an instant classic. I, myself, am a huge fan of movies in general, even though classic movies (ones that are in black and white) do not usually appeal to me as much as new movies do. That is not the case with Wild Strawberries. This movie was such an instant classic that I feel that it appeals to both young and old audiences alike. If you are a fan of great movies, or a person who has to see all the classics, then waste no time in running out to your local movie store and pick up your copy of Wild Strawberries today. You will not be sorry you did.
