The Basics Of Citation

Added: 10/16/2005

Citations, what are they and how should we use them? I am not talking about the police ticket version, but more the credit and reference of another work used in our own so people can look them up. There are many different types of citations, all with a set of their own guidelines and specific style that you should follow when using them. Here we'll look at the basics of citation and some of the guidelines and styles for some of the fields.

Citation is a form of giving credits or references to another's works within our own, many people use them in all kinds of writing and everyday work. Mainly they are used in articles, research and other forms of the writing genre. There are different fields of citation like law, science and theological and a different set of guidelines and styles for each of them. But lets just have a look at the basics and a little of the need to knows.

Basics
When it comes to citing another's work no matter what it is, books, articles, internet, music, photography and art or a conversation it should be done appropriately, the techniques for them are all similar but differ slightly depending on what the source is.

Here are some examples for the main references used for citations and how they should be set out.

A book citation should consist of this order: author, book title, edition, place of publication, publisher and the publication date

Ex.Sandford, John, Rules Of Prey, special overseas edition, Great Britain, Graften Books, 1990

And a chapter would go in the same sort of order: author, Chapter, book title, editor, place of publication, publisher, publication date, page numbers

An article citation would go in the order of: author, article title, journal title, volume number, issue number, publication date, page numbers

Or for a newspaper it would go like: author, article title, newspaper title, publication date, section, page

Ex. Evans, Nancy, Sizzling Rodeo Action, Northern Downs News,6/10/05, front page, page 1

And for a website citation it would go in the order: Author/editor, title, site information, retrieval date, website url

Ex. Brooke, Bob, 20 Rules For Good Writing, The Writer Gazette Copyright 2001, 2002 Krista Barrett & Writer Gazette, retrieval date 14/10/05, http://www.writergazette.com/articles/article50.shtml

When you cite another persons work you must follow the guidelines of giving them two citations, one within your work in short and the other at the end of your work with full information.
Example within your work.
Nancy says "more than 1000 people watched local and interstate cowboys compete for prize money and points towards the series final in November." (2005, p.1)
Example at the end of your work: Evans, Nancy, Sizzling Rodeo Action, Northern Downs News,6/10/05, front page, page 1

There are many citation styles that you can use the most common of these styles are the APA, AMA, ASR and the Turabian styles. There are many website's and books out there that will explain these styles in finer detail.

Another note to remember when writing is that you make sure that you do use a citation method because otherwise you could be committing a crime called plagiarism.

When citing, make sure that you include quotation marks on what the person said or wrote and include their name.

Also copyright comes into practice when you use another's work and that is why you should cite the author/creator of the work you are using, this also applies to public domain material.

Also when it comes to citation there are many website's that list social book marking and social citation or tagging resources like links, information and articles, these are called a social citation index, the purpose of such resources are for people to save work and be able to share such things with other users for reference and so forth, it is beginning to grow very popular as there are now many services that do this for you. It saves time and you get a lot more sources to work with.

Citation is something that we all do at one time or another so it is good to learn how to do it properly even if it is just the basics to start with and go into the more advance guidelines and styles when you need more of a clearer definition.
