You do not need to be perfect in grammar to write a poem. You do not even need to be a great writer. Even if you failed miserably in writing class at school, you can still create a great poem. There are a few tricks to doing this and almost anyone can master this. The reason that you will want to create friendship poems is because this is quite different than speaking words or buying a card that already has the words written in it. A poem is a very intimate, personal creation. When you give someone a poem, they know that the words come from your heart and this means a lot. It can mean more than any gift you could ever give to a good friend.
When you have decided that friendship poems are the way to go, it is best to begin with a lot of paper. Never think that you can simply whip up a poem in a few moments and have your final copy. That is one of the reasons that poems are so special: the recipient knows that time and effort was put into the creation of it.
You should first think about what you would like to generally be saying in the poem. For example, do you wish to talk about what a great personality your friend has? Or do you wish to speak of the wonderful memories that the two of your have shared? Once you have decided on your topic, you are already underway! The next thing that you should do, is to make a list of words that you associate with your friend. Use a whole piece of paper, and simply keep writing down words that come to mind when you think about that friend of yours. It is ok to write down a lot of words; they will not all be used. This will be your base.
Once you have a list of words, you should then take a look through the list and cross out any that really do not fit the description of your topic. Once doing so, get a second piece of paper; it is now time to rhyme. Finding words that rhyme for your friendship poems may be a lot easier than you may think. All you must do is write down the alphabet on paper. This may seem too simple; everyone knows the alphabet, right? Well, when you are doing this next step, it is sometimes easy to skip over a letter, so it is best to write the alphabet down on paper.
Now, you will take the first word and begin to test it on each letter of the alphabet. For example, if you take the word sun, you will then test it against all letters of the alphabet to see if you can make rhyming words. You will have aun, bun, cun, dun, or done, un, fun, etc. In this way, you can then circle or underline words that may make sense in a poem. In this case, sun may do nicely with fun. Once you have a good size set of rhyming words, try to form simple sentences. Keep in mind the topic of your poem. For this example, you may want to write, “When you smile you remind me of the sun, I will always remember all the days you brought me fun”. You can test out different sentences to see what works for you. Look over your poem to make sure that it makes sense. Your last step will be the final copy. Hand-written poems are best, however if your handwriting is truly terrible, you can type it in a nice interesting font in an appropriate color. If you can afford it, buy a simple photo frame and frame the poem. This can make a fantastic gift that your friend will remember forever.
