One site on the World Wide Web where you can find lists of children’s camps, broken down into lists of boys’ camps, girls’ camps and coed camps is www.camppage.com. There, I learned the following about kids’ camps in the state of Texas.

Children's camps for boys
Camppage.com lists four children's camps exclusively for boys in Texas. They include: Camp La Junta in Hunt, Texas, and Camp Rio Vista in Ingram, Texas. Both boys’ camps are in the scenic Texas Hill Country. Camp Rio Vista is the oldest private camp in the Southwest region, and it sits on 120 acres that your boys can enjoy. Campers aged 6 to 16 get to choose their favorite activities from among 35 choices that include journalism, photography, martial arts, tumbling, scrap booking, drama dance, kayaking, swimming, fishing, water-skiing and much more. For more information, visit www.vistacamps.com.

The other of the children's camps listed that is just for boys is Camp La Junta in Hunt. This is an old kids’ camp as well, having been established in 1928 to give boys a place to escape the city and have fun in the great outdoors. Camp La Junta sits on 200 acres near the Guadalupe River, and activities include competitive sports and horseback riding. For more information, visit www.lajunta.com.

Children’s camps for girls
Camp Arrowhead, also in Hunt, Texas, is an all-girls’ camp. Girls ages 6 to 17 can come to this beautiful camp that sits on 650 acres to participate in a range of activities. There is archery, cheerleading, self-defense, swimming, tennis and more. Visit www.camparrowhead.com for details.

Another girls’ camp is Camp Sierra Vista in Hunt, Texas. It is the sister camp to Camp Rio Vista, which is for boys only. It’s not nearly as old as Camp Rio Vista; it was established in 1982. However, it offers the same fun environment and beautiful camp scenery on 120 acres as the older camp. For more information, visit www.vistacamps.com.

Camp Mitre Peak in Alpine, Texas, is way out in West Texas, but it’s within range of some lovely mountain views. It was founded in the 1940s, and activities are the camp standards. Girls aged 7 to 17 are invited to join in summer fun here. Visit gspb.org/camping for details.

Other children's camps exclusively for girls in Texas include the Kickapoo Kamp for Girls in Kerrville, Texas; Blue Streak Stables camp for horsemanship in Seguin, Texas; and Heart o’ the Hills camp in Hunt, Texas.

Children’s camps for boys and girls
There are many coed children’s camps in Texas. One is the Aquatic Sciences Adventure Camp in San Marcos, Texas. It is held on the campus of Texas State University. My son attended this camp in summer 2005 and made several new friends as he learned more about science. There’s a healthy dose of fun activities at this camp, too, including tubing down the San Marcos River.

For information on the many other coed children’s camps, be sure to check out www.camppage.com. You’ll find just the kids' camp you’re looking for.
