Scranton, Pennsylvania, located in the north east corner of the state, has gone through many changes over the years. It used to be called Armstrong, Slocum and Lacawanna Iron Works. Thankfully, it’s now just Scranton, named after city founder George Scranton. What ever you call it, Scranton has always been industrious and busy. It’s a few hours from New York City in the north and Philadelphia in the south, and shares an airport with the neighboring town of Wilkes-Barre. Once famous for coal mining – Scranton was once known as “the Anthracite (Hard Coal) Capital of the World” – Scranton is now home to many manufacturing businesses and service industries. There’s always something new being built or renovated in Scranton.

Check out the Electric Trolley Station and Museum. If you like history, an American Revolution-era house is still kept as a mini-museum at the Tripp House. And, for literal magic, have a date at the Houdini Museum, run by professional magicians.

In good weather, you and your date can see the beautiful countryside sill left in Scranton’s many parks. You can hike, picnic, kayak, and go horseback riding or fishing. The Nay Aug Park (yes, that’s the name) even has a wildlife center. Check what’s available at the time of year you wish to visit. You can talk to your favorite travel agent for help, or with the Scranton tourist board.

Scranton is always busy, but not as expensive as big cities. It’s a growing city that is in the crossroads of New York and Philadelphia. That is something for the Scranton single that is budget-conscious to keep in mind. It might take a little homework, but good times (and cheap beer) can be found.
