Galveston first began to be permanently settled in the early 19th century. The first permanent settlements were in fact built by a pirate, Louis-Michel Aury as a base of operations in his assistance to Mexico as part of the Mexican independence movement. Mexico would ultimately win its independence from Spain in 1821, but the town of Galveston would remain.

Galveston was named prior to Aury's coming to the region, however. In 1785 this region of the Texas coast was charted by the Spanish explorer Jose de Evia. He named the region after the chief general of Spanish forces in North America at the time, Bernando de Galvez. Pirates were definitely an important part of its origin, however. Besides Louis-Michel Aury, the area was also settled by the pirate Jean Lafitte.

Lafitte is most famous for his works of piracy in the New Orleans area and his original base of operations was found in Barataria Bay just off the coast of New Orleans. After being driven out of New Orleans he made his way to what his now Galveston. He made his own settlement here, a pirate kingdom of sorts with himself as king. Although Lafitte was ultimately driven out of Galveston as well, it is rumored that his treasure is still to be found here somewhere in the area.

From origins of pirates the history of Galveston continued to be an interesting one as it continued to develop as an important port city in this area of Texas. It went through rule by Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas and ultimately the United States of America. Besides the beautiful white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico there is also a lot of fascinating history to be found here in Galveston Texas.
