Summer And Winter Universiade Games Of 2009

The word “Universiade” comes from “Olympiad” and “university”, and means Olympic Games for students. The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games. The universiade are subcategorized into two sporting events, the Summer Universiade and the Winter Universiade, each of them having separate sports according to the weather where student athletes fly in to participate in this competition.
During August 22 - September 1st 1995, for the first time, Moldavian student sport delegation participated at the ninth edition of the World Universiade in Fukuoka. The Universiade is an international multi-sporting event that is held after every two years which is organized for the students and universities athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is often referred to in English as the World Student Games or World University Games.

The universiade are subdivided in to two more sporting events i.e. the Summer Universiade and the Winter Universiade, where the Summer Universiade’s started from the year 1959 whereas the Winter Universiade were held from the year 1960. The recent World University Games were held in the beginning of 2007. The 2007 Summer Universiade, also known as the XXIV Summer Universiade, took place in Bangkok, Thailand. The Summer Universiade includes the following sports Athletics, Basketball, Diving, Gymnastics, Fencing, Football, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball and Waterpolo. While Archery, Sailing, Softball, Taekwondo and Wrestling are optional sports that are sometimes exclued from the World Student Games. On the other hand the Winter Universiade, the XXIII Winter Universiade, took place in Turin, Italy from January 17 to January 27, 2007.

The opening ceremony of XXIII Winter Universiade was marvelous with a cast of circus performers, dancers and acrobats. The evening began with the "Princess of the Snow", Magda Gomes, who introduced the audience with an introduction to the hosting city, Turin, to the rest of the world through the student spirit of the Universiade. Her message was followed by a parade of the 52 participant nations and a speech by George Killian, the FISU President and Giovanna Capellano Nebiolo, President of the Organizing Committee. They both opened the sporting event with a warm welcome. The Winter Universiade sports include Alpine skiing, Biathlon, Cross-country skiing, Curling, Figure skating, Ice hockey, Nordic combined, Short track speed skating, Ski jumping, Snowboarding and Speed skating
Now the next Universiade are scheduled to be in 2009, after two years where Belgrade in Serbia and Harbin in China is announced as the host cities of the 2009 Universiades. It is also being said that the next hosting cities concerts, performances and other shows will be held for the millions of audiences that flew in to watch the Universiade. This way the crowd will not only get to enjoy the multi-spot event but also performances from other artists. In the end the winner athletes will be rewarded with tickets to different exciting countries like Istanbul and Antalya. The hosting countries of 2009 Universiade Games would be prepared with huge press, restaurants, transportation, medical care, additional programs and backup plans for a bad weather to make this event as perfect and rememberable as they can.
