Stealing Beauty by Bernardo Bertolucci : Full of the good, bad and the ugly.

Stealing Beauty is a famous film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. Starring the movie are Joseph Fiennes, Jeremy Irons and Liv Tyler. A very sensual film and it has highlighted the heroine’s physical assets than her acting capabilities. Stealing beauty is about a teenager who on a summer vacation sets out to find out about her father and at the same time intends to loose her virginity.

This story revolves around an American girl who is 19 years old. Liv Tyler plays the role of Lucy Harmon, the American teenager in this movie. After her mother commits suicide, she goes to Tuscany. Here she plans to spend her summer with her family friends Ian and Diana Grayson (roles played by McCann and Cusack respectively at their beautiful villa which is on a hill top. She has supposedly come here this summer to pose for her portrait for Ian who is a sculptor. The story of stealing beauty shows that Lucy has other reasons too her trip to this romantic hilltop. Lucy from a journal understands that mother had come here some twenty years back and spends some considerable amount of time and happened to conceive Lucy. Lucy wants to find out her biological father and for that she starts making some new friends among the guest of the Graysons. Stealing beauty is about Lucy writing poems as her mother used to do twenty years back in the same place. It has also shown Lucy still having an infatuation on Noccolo who she had met some four years back. It was with him that she had shared her life’s first kiss and now wants to win his friendship back. Her friends in Tuscany find it difficult to believe that she is still a virgin. So apart from finding her father she also intends to lose her virginity this summer.
The other friends of the Graysons include Carlo Lisca (Carlo Cecchi), M. Guillaume (Jean Marais), Richard Reed (D. W. Moffett), Noemi (Sefania Sandrelli), Miranda Fox (Rachel Weisz) and Christopher (Joseph Fiennes). Another important character of Alex Parrish played by Jeremy Irons who is chronically sick and counting his last days is staying with the family.
Technically speaking about Stealing Beauty, Tuscany, Italy the back ground of the movie looks beautiful and mind boggling. Bernardo Bertolucci the Italian director has made this place even more colorful and beautiful. After 15 years of exile, self imposed, Bernardo Bertolucci has set his foot in Italy with this movie. His Set designer, Gianni Silvestri has done a remarkable job.
Darius Khondji has handled cinematography in this movie. A major portion of the movie is shot outside to get the proper feel. The first scene of the movie is enchanting. What has let the movie down is the script. The script by Susan Minot based on the story by Bernardo Bertolucci is very weak. The story is very unconvincing. Music again, by Richard Hartley is very sordinary and nothing above the average. Performance of the actors is also not justified. They don’t look as a part of the movie. In a nut shell there is not anything about the movie that can make u sit through it
In simple words the movie revolves around free sex, nudity, filthy languages and casual usage of drugs. Most of the time, the characters in the movie are found to be running around with no clothes on them. All men in the movie seem to be attracted to Lucy. Smoking and doping are commonly shown here. There seems to be a small mystery in stealing beauty but that gets resolved very easily.
