Epilepsy is known as a seizure disorder. Even though it can be controlled with medication, there are factors that can cause seizures to happen. By drastically reducing or eliminating certain situations, you will be able to reduce the frequency of your seizures. Being a teenager usually means wanting to do anything and everything. There is a feeling of being indestructible and nothing can hurt you. Having this condition, however, means to do the opposite to keep up your health. The more you get yourself in physical or emotional situations that you cannot handle, the more stress you are exposed to. Since too much stress can trigger a seizure, you need to limit what you do to avoid any unnecessary stress. Learn techniques such as meditation to lower your stress level to maintain your health both physically and emotionally.
Another thing teenagers like to do is stay up and hang out late. Socialization is very important but to a certain degree. It is nice to go out and meet new people and hang out with your friends. You can do this at a reasonable hour and should not be so late at night. If you are not getting enough sleep or rest, it can cause seizures to occur and present problems that can attribute to poor health. Having epilepsy does not mean to avoid socializing with others, but to make sure you get enough rest and sleep each night. The choice becomes what matters more to you; making a new friend or your health? A true friend will respect your lifestyle and adapt with you. Always remember there are lots of factors that can influence your health and you need to be responsible in knowing what is good for you and what is bad.
A part of fitting in with teenagers today is consumption of alcohol. This is dangerous for your average teenager and, of course, against the law. Having epilepsy only makes the consumption of alcohol even more dangerous! Having a seizure can be dangerous in a setting where no alcohol is involved and people around you know how to help you through this. If you and the people around you are drinking, nothing positive can come out of it. If you have a seizure, it will be intensified due to the alcohol. The people around you will react slower and may be confused as a result of drinking. In addition you never know how your medication might interact with the alcohol. In this situation, you can end up hurting yourself seriously or even dying. Staying away from alcohol is in your best interests and if you feel you have to drink to fit in, then you need to find new friends.
The pressures that go with being a teenager are not easy. Having epilepsy makes it harder but possible to handle. Knowing your limitations will help keep you healthy and strong. This will enable you to not be shut out from making friends and having a productive life. Surrounding yourself with people who support you is key. Do not have friends who are constantly pressuring you. The added stress is only harmful to you, as well as lack of sleep and consuming alcohol. Your true friends will respect your choices and help you live a life full of friends and staying in good health.
