In the realm of England the national parks are innovative, entertaining and profitable projects. Keeping this aspect in concern the concerned authority is keeping no stone unturned to make the concept of national parks a major success. In this regard, the South Downs National Park is a proposed national park in the South Downs region of England. The proposed park is stretched over 90 miles, from Winchester to Hampshire in the west to Beachy Head in the east, near Eastbourne in East Sussex. While on the other hand, the southern boundary of the projected park lies a few miles inland along most of its length, excluding the coastal towns and cities of Southampton, Portsmouth, Chichester, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Worthing and Brighton. But it is destined to include the towns of Petersfield, Liss, Midhurst, Arundel and Lewes. Gain, it has been learnt, that it would also include two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or AONB, East Hampshire and Sussex Downs. However, there is a distinct trait, which is not found with the other national parks. It is said, that it would include an area of chalk downland, where on each year, on an approximate basis 39 million people visit the area. Now, it is not such that this area was selected suddenly. The Hobhouse Report in 1947 selected 12 prime areas. The South Downs among them happens to be the only one that is yet to become a national park. With this end in view a decision was taken in the 1950s that ploughing of the downland had reduced its potential for the use in various recreational programs, leading to the creation of AONBs or the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Noticing a great amount of profit in these, the establishment of a National Park in South Downs was most desirable and therefore got the support from the various governmental echelons in the year 1999. To make it a great success, the countryside agency made an Order to designate the anticipated park in January 2003, and was submitted to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on 27 January, 2003. Again the land of Arundel, that was previously proposed for the sake of a bypass was added to the projected area for the national park in South Downs, in January 2004 after the Secretary of State for Transport decided not to proceed with the bypass.

It is to b noted, that as a result of an assortment of objections and representations on the proposed Order, a public enquiry was conducted between the 10 th of November 2003 and 23rd March, 2005. The central aim was to recommend to the Government whether a National park should be confirmed and, if it would be a reality what would be the boundaries. Though the results of the inquiry were expected by the end of 2005, there was an unusual delay pending a legal issue arising from a High Court case challenging part of the Order designating the New Forest National Park. Again, following an appeal on the High Court case and new legislation included in the National Environment and Rural Communities Act, 2006, the South Downs Inquiry Report was published on 31 March, 2006. To the latest information, the Secretary of State has now invited objections and representations on new issues relating to the South Downs National Park.
