Sexual addiction is an affliction suffered by three million or more in the United States. Yet, in a land filled with psychologists and psychiatrists, little is known about relievers for the addiction and there are no standard relievers. Pharmaceuticals, too, are rarely proper pain relievers. To what or who can the sex addict turn? And what can those close to them do to help?

Despite its seriousness as a growing addiction in the United States, sexual addiction is not even listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. With no physical manifestations of the problem, even informal diagnosis becomes difficult for those with security concerns for this friend or family member. Lack of physical manifestations of sex addiction aside, there are some signs.

There are many negative results of being a person with an addiction involving sex. Most, if not all, the consequences of such an issue result in problems that become apparent as physical manifestations of health problems, aberrant psychological displays as well as many other forms of behavior whose end results are questionable. Generally it's an accepted theme that as long as we're not hurting anyone but ourselves let well enough alone. Unfortunately security concerns are one of the consequences of sexual addiction so that alone means intervention and behavior modification techniques must be employed.

Obsession has been described as being an overwhelming preoccupation with an action, or situation that the person with the obsession knows will result in a problematic issue if pursuit is continued. Many an obsession, in particular those pertaining to sexual addition, are illegal when enacted to fruition. For those in doubt as to whether they fall into this category there are indicators that they may be suffering from a sexual addiction but they need to be open to admitting that these indicators exist.
