How antiquity views masturbation has differed from society to society and the further back one delves into history the more one finds that it wasn't viewed with the all pervasive disparity that it came to represent. In our modern world, it is easy to forget that other historical eras, like classical antiquity, have come before us, each with its own ideas of what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate sexual behavior. As we consider our own attitudes on these topics, we might do well to slow down and think about what ties our ideas to our own historical moment. After all, gaining a historical perspective on our attitudes and moralities can only help us make the right choices when it comes to what is appropriate and what is inappropriate.
