How antiquity views masturbation has differed from society to society and the further back one delves into history the more one finds that it wasn't viewed with the all pervasive disparity that it came to represent. From depictions on cave walls, to samurai on silk paper there is a great deal of evidence pointing to the prevalence of releasing sexual frustration with masturbation. There is evidence of both male and female masturbation and much association being made with abundance, creativity and magical acts.

Historical societal constraints have been put in place and are implemented with the idea of controlling a certain segment of the society. Sexually there seem to have been more societal constraints placed on every aspect of the act from envisioning to actually physical manipulation than anything else in history. One theory of constraints regarding masturbation revolves around the idea that if one is masturbating one isn't pursuing the continuation of the species. There are certain benefits to masturbation and it's unfortunate that the theory of constraints doesn't to take these into account.

In our modern world, it is easy to forget that other historical eras, like classical antiquity, have come before us, each with its own ideas of what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate sexual behavior. As we consider our own attitudes on these topics, we might do well to slow down and think about what ties our ideas to our own historical moment. After all, gaining a historical perspective on our attitudes and moralities can only help us make the right choices when it comes to what is appropriate and what is inappropriate.

Seniors are a growing population in modern society, yet little attention is paid to the realities of sexuality during the later years of life. Because of misinformation they receive and negative attitudes which they absorb from the culture at large, many senior experience intense and unnecessary sexual frustration. However, the culture is beginning to change, and in the years to come the amount and rigidity of constraints on senior sexuality will begin to dwindle.
