Miami Beach, Florida has the world's largest collection of Art Deco structures. Its famous Art Deco district includes South Beach or SoBe as it is sometimes called. South Beach is known for fun-filled days and sizzling nightlife. If Art Deco and SoBe are not your style, Miami Beach has so much more to offer including spectacular beaches, delectable cuisine, fabulous shopping, sporting events, and arts and culture.
Miami Beach's Art Deco district and South Beach neighborhood are two of the city's most distinguishing attractions. The Art Deco District has the world's largest collection of Art Deco architecture. It has hundreds of Art Deco hotels, apartments, and other structures that were built between 1923 and 1943. The Art Deco design uses materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, lacquer, inlaid wood, sharkskin, and zebraskin to create zigzag and stepped forms, sweeping curves, V-shaped patterns, and sunburst motifs. In 1979 The Art Deco Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Miami Beach's South Beach area also known as SoBe is one of the city's most popular areas. This 23-block section of the Art Deco District was the first to be developed starting in the 1910s. SoBe is always full of energy and activity. By day tourists may encounter alluring models, cool vintage cars, awesome Harleys, and rollerbladers of all ages. They can also spend time relaxing on a white sandy beach and even do a little topless sunbathing. When the sun goes down warm, easy going days turn into sizzling South Beach nights. There are more than 150 clubs within the 23-block area. Because most of them do not close until 5:00 am, partygoers can dance until dawn.
After you have explored the Art Deco District, you might take a walk down the nationally recognized Lincoln Road – known for its fantastic outdoor dining, bike riding, and of course, shopping. If you are looking for a more relaxed experience, make a visit to Haulover Beach Park. The park, which is situated between the Intercoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean, has white sandy beaches, an open ocean surf, and sand dunes. You can easily spend the entire day soaking in the warm rays of the sun, building sand castles, or splashing in the ocean.
As you can imagine, there are countless hotels in Miami Beach and the surrounding areas. However, if you are interested in Art Deco staying at one of the Miami Beach hotels in the South Beach area is an excellent way to experience this architecture. There are a number of great Art Deco hotels including: the affordable, yet luxurious Catalina Hotel & Beach Club; the exquisite Lily Leon; the upscale Whitelaw Hotel and Lounge; and the all-suite Mercury Resort.
Miami Beach has seen many difficulties over the course of its history. However, time and time again it has reinvented itself. Its most recent revitalization occurred in 1980s and early 1990s when billions of dollars of investment capital poured into the city. These investments resulted in a beautiful new skyline in the downtown area and a modernized transportation system among other things. Miami Beach also has a renewed city life that is designed to attract an international audience and that emphasizes arts, culture, sports, and entertainment.
