 Scholar Athlete Games Inspire Intellectual Excellence

What are scholar athlete games? Are the terms appearing as new ones? Well, there is no doubt in it that indeed these are new and are derived from the tradition of the modern Olympic Games, but however, seeks to add a new dimension. It is to be noted that these games emerged from the core belief that the appeal of the international sport could be a driving force in due course of time for the sake of better understanding and friendship among world athletes and, indirectly, among nations!
Now, if this happens to be the definition of the scholar athlete games, what do they stand for in reality? In short, the scholar athlete games do uphold or celebrate the same tradition of better understanding and friendship while at the same time celebrating scholarship, athletics and cultural growth. It is to be noted, that from its inception in the year 1993 conceived by the Institute for International Sport, followed by the examples of 1997 and 2001, the scholar athlete games have always been major successes proving that academics, athletics and culture can be a uniting force! Only in the initial year of 1993 students from all around the world, the young citizens of the future participated in great numbers, even for the discussion of the pressing global matters while using sport and culture for the sake of establishing open and long-lasting relationships. It should be taken into consideration, that in the three scholar athlete games of 1993, 1997 and 2001, over 5,500 young people, if not more from 186 different countries participated to share their talents, their thoughts and their dreams on a common platform. While they arrived at the University of Rhode Island as strangers, they left as friends with a shared understanding of their role as future world leaders. In this respect it would perhaps not be wrong to mention that the scholar athlete games have always been revolving around three principal objectives. They include, the promotion of understanding, acceptance and friendship among youth; to establish open, non-political, long-standing relationships among tomorrow's world leaders; to utilize sports and the arts as means of communication and working strategies as our participants pursue positions of leadership in government, education and other professional fields. Besides it has also been found that by means of their noble experiences in various quarters, viz. on the playing field or in the classroom or studio, in group discussions or informal gatherings, the games have always taught participants the need to develop understanding, acceptance and friendship with peers from around the world. Besides, it is also an objective of the scholar athlete games that through sport and cultural activities, each participant becomes an ambassador of goodwill and sportsmanship. As representatives of their countries, participants help others understand not only what is unique about their culture, but also more significantly what is similar between cultures. Even in the ancient India, where there was the prevalence of the Gurukul system of education, there was the presence of scholar athlete games and in high esteem!
Lastly, in the scholar athlete games there is the presence of several types of sports and cultural arts. In the realm of sports, there are, Baseball *; Basketball; Golf; Chess; Golf; Field Hockey**; Lacrosse; Rugby*; Soccer; Squash; Softball**; Swimming; Tennis; Track & Field; Volleyball * For boys only ** For girls only. Again the realm of culrural arts, there are, Art; Choir; Culinary; Dance; Photography; Symphony Orchestra; Theater; Writing/Poetry.
