Schlitterbahns Are Cool And Plentiful In Texas

Added: 06/29/2007

Planning a trip to Texas this summer with your family? Afraid of the sweltering heat the Lone Star State is famous for? Imagine instead, the thrill of amusement park rides combined with incredibly cool refreshing water and you will find yourself immersed at a Schlitterbahn Waterpark. Discover for yourself why Texas Family Magazine has ranked the schlitterbahns the number one kid-friendly destinations in Texas.

What exactly is a schlitterbahn? A schlitterbahn is a German word meaning “slippery road.”All of the schlitterbahns are family owned and operated and have been a leader in family water entertainment since 1979. Some of the popular family-friendly amenities the schlitterbahns offer include free parking and free inner tubes. Plus, families are allowed to bring in their own picnic basket (excluding alcohol and glass containers) to the parks which can really help with the budget and keep even the finicky eaters in your group content.

The number one ranked parts include Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort in New Braunfels, Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South Padre Island, and the newest Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark located on historic Galveston Island.

All three schlitterbahns are located in easy to get to cities which are accessible by major Texas highways. The Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort in New Braunfels, TX was the first park to open in 1979. It is widely considered to be the best waterpark in the U.S. and has been named so by the Travel Channel. Some of the most exciting rides it offers are the Master Blaster, Dragon Blaster, and the Family Blaster. These are unique in that they are all uphill water coasters! In addition to the water coasters, the New Braunfels park has over 3 miles of inner tube rides, 7 water playgrounds for children , 17 water rides and the world’s first surfing machine- The Boogie Bahn. This is a really big park and with so much to do you may want to take advantage of the accommodations the park has to offer. There are 238 overnight accommodations and these range from motel rooms to duplexes, cottages, apartments and condominiums.Although the actual waterpark is seasonal, the Resort area of this park is actually open all year round so if you wanted to have a family reunion or get together, this is a nice option to remember. New Braunfels is only 30 minutes from San Antonio and 45 min from Austin, so it is very convenient for travelers.

In 2001, the 26 acre Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark opened in South Padre Island which is located at the southernmost part of the state. Mexico is approximately a 30 minute drive from this location. In 2006, the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark welcomed its first visitors. It offers the world’s first convertible, climate controlled indoor/outdoor waterpark. This feature allows the park to be open all year round! Both of these schlitterbahns also have “Transportainment” river systems, which allow guests to navigate most of the park (including waiting in line at rides) without having to leave the comfort of the cool, refreshing water.

All of the schlitterbahns are proud and excited to offer a large collection of exhilarating, state of the art, water attractions that will appeal to all members of the family. The thrill seekers will be satisfied with the adrenalin filled coaster rides and the toddlers will be delighted with the friendly waterparks that have been created especially for them. Schlitterbahn’s catchphrase is “the hottest, coolest time in Texas!” and they want everyone who visits to never forget that!

Because the schlitterbahns are so successful in Texas, plans to build a fourth park in Kansas City, Kansas have been announced. The intention is to build this complex in the destination area that has grown around the Kansas Speedway since its construction. The proposed Schlitterbahn Vacation Village will sit upon 300 acres and will include lodging, entertainment shopping and dining venues connected by a Transportainment River System. It will also include a saltwater “Interactive Marine Park” for diving and other activities.
