Samuel Leroy Jackson: An actor and a golfer

Jackson, who was born on December 21st 1948 in Washington D.C, grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, becomes a BAFFTA winning actor and an American Academy Award Nominee, Samuel Leroy Jackson is a great film star with over 70 successful films to his credit. He is a vivacious golf player, a basketball fan apart from a busy actor and loves to watch his own movies in theatres along with others who pay to watch them.

Samuel Jackson lived with his mother Elizabeth Jackson at his maternal grand parent’s house. His father lived in Kansas City, Missouri, separately and eventually died of alcoholism. Jackson has met him just twice. He attended Riverside High school which is now called as the’ Chattanooga school for the Arts and sciences’. While in there he would play French horn and Trumpet for the school orchestra. He also attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
In his earlier days, Jackson was very religiously involved in Civil Right Movements. In the year 1969 Samuel Jackson and many other students took the members of the board and trustees of Morehouse College hostage asking for a reformation of the curriculum of the school and its governance. This action of his although had the college agree to their terms, got him suspended for two years. He was also a part of the Black Power movement so much so that the FBI warned his mother that he would be killed if he remained involved in this for some time. He was then sent to Los Angeles by his mother.
Jackson went back to Morehouse College with drama as his major. He took up public speaking classes and appeared in ‘The Threepenny Opera. He started doing plays and even TV films. ‘Together for days’ released in 1972, was his first feature film. He then moved to New York City and started stabling his career as an actor. Soon he became an alcohol and cocaine addict and the results were very detrimental for his career. After finishing the projects in hand, his family put him in a rehabilitation clinic. After finishing his rehab he acted as cocaine addicted brother to Wesley Snipes in ‘Jungle Fever’. He was applauded for this role and he was awarded with a special ‘Supporting actor’ in the Cannes Film Festival. It was as if the good time has started. He started to get many offers. He worked in films like ‘Strictly Business’, ‘Juice’, ‘Patriot games’, comedies like ‘National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1’ and ‘Amos & Andrew’. He also worked with Steven Spielberg in ‘Jurassic Park’. ‘Pulp Fiction’ along with John Travolta is possibly one of his best performances. He won the BAFTA best supporting actors and was also nominated for Academy Award.
This followed a series of unsuccessful movies like ‘The Great White Hype’, ‘Kiss of Death’ and ‘Losing Isaiah’. ‘A time to Kill’ and ‘Die Hard with a Vengeance’ with Bruce Willis gave him a career boost. This was once again as if a new leash of life. After this he will never probably need to look back. Movies like ‘Jackie Brown’, ‘Sphere’, ‘The Negotiator, ‘Deep Blue Sea’, ’Star War episode one- the phantom menace’ etc were successful beyond words. The list is never ending. His future projects include ‘Jumper’, and ‘Cleaner’, ‘The Spirit’, ‘Lake view Terrace’, ‘Iron Man’, etc.
Jackson who is bald in real life wears different wigs for his roles. His hobby is to collect the action figures of the roles played by him in his movies like Jules Winnfield, Mace Windu, Frozone and Shaft. Married to actress Latanya Richardson, Jackson has a daughter named Zoe25 years old who is studying in culinary school. They are now living in Los Angeles, California.
