Remember playing the truth or dare game as an innocent youth? Remember playing the truth or dare game as a not so innocent teen? Truth or dare is one of the ways that your friends, or folks that aren't quite your friends, can find out little facts about you or they can see just how far you are willing to go to impress the crowd. People say that Madonna took the idea behind truth or dare and made a tawdry singing career out of it. I say that she really didn't change the idea of the game very much at all.
I remember playing the truth or dare game as a teen-ager and I don’t think I am going to give any details here. Let’s just say that the perspective of truth or dare changes drastically after a person hits puberty. For a guy your voice changes and so does your opinion of the opposite sex. However, it is limiting the truth or dare game to say that it is only a coed pastime. Truth or dare was also played quite frequently by groups of females I used to be friends with. It was always interesting to come to school one crisp autumn morning to find out that half the female population of your high school knows that you are an awkward kisser at best. Truth or dare help to perpetuate the old saying that there are three sure ways to get information to the masses: telephone, television, and tell a woman. But it is all part of growing up and the little embarrassing moments soon drift into your memories. That is until someone like Madonna comes along and takes the truth or dare game to the adult level using the mass media. When I saw that for the first time I knew I had some more growing up to do.
I have nothing against Madonna. She may not be my cup of tea musically but I can appreciate anyone that has achieved a huge level of success. She has achieved levels of success that most people, including myself, will never see. For that I applaud her. But when she started with the truth or dare thing with the videos and the albums I started to realize that there is a great deal of creativity that goes into being a pervert. Remember that I said I appreciated Madonna, I never said anything about respect. When I first saw advertisements for her Truth Or Dare movie instantly my mind was reaching back to my childhood years and reliving some of those fond memories. Then I started to see more and more of her idea of truth or dare and I realized that this was not my childhood game anymore. It actually bothers me a little bit that Madonna would take a right of passage like truth or dare and sex it up for her own gain. No one owns the concept of truth or dare but sometimes you like your childhood activities to remain at a child’s level. I am sure she isn’t the first person to twist truth or dare into a sexual mess but she was the first to do it in front of the whole world and that has always bothered me.
Our games as kids were not always innocent. Little boys and girls getting caught playing naughty games has been going on since the dawn of time. Sometimes, though, it really leaves a bad taste in the public’s mouth when an entertainer takes a right of passage from youth to adulthood and turns it into a perverted burlesque show.
