Remembering The Fore Fathers On Patriot's Day In US

Added: 11/02/2007

Every country has its story of its origins and many milestone days are remembered each and every year by the people that live in that country. Some of these celebrations are national while others remain regional as the pride felt for that region’s contribution to the creation of the country is strong. In New England Patriot’s Day is just such a day and they celebrate it proudly.

On the third Monday in April, if you were to visit Boston, Massachusetts, you would probably notice that the Boston Red Sox were playing a game that day. You would also notice that near Fenway Park where the Red Sox play, Kenmore Square more specifically, that they are getting ready to run the world famous Boston Marathon. When the Red Sox game lets out the starting gun will sound and the runners will be on their way in the Boston Marathon. You are seeing celebrations of Patriot’s Day in the US when you see all of this activity and really what it is brings those things that are Boston together into one day to remember those that died for the creation of our country and how many of the key battles of the American Revolution were fought in Boston and all of New England.

Patriot’s Day in the US used to be celebrated on April 19th of every year to honor the battles fought at Lexington and Concord that were so very crucial in the American Revolution. Celebrations were staged in Boston, parts of the state of Maine, and even in parts of the state of Wisconsin. Those battles were fought at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775 and that is when the people decided to celebrate their contribution to the American Revolution and American independence. But around 1969 the celebrations got moved to the third Monday in April to give people a long weekend to celebrate and to also allow these other traditional Boston events, the Red Sox game and the Boston Marathon, to all be held on the same day. Many of the local colleges and other schools are closed on Patriot's Day in US and if it happens to fall on Tax Day then the people that live in the New England states, New York state, Maryland, and the District of Columbia all get an one day extension on their tax returns. All of this to celebrate one of the turning points in the creation of the United States of America.

Patriot's Day in US is not just about baseball games and marathons, many people gather to remember directly what Patriot's Day in US is all about. During the long weekend there are several recreations of the critical battles of the American Revolution that are being celebrated with Patriot's Day in US and many of the local citizens are involved either watching the recreations or participating in them. These recreations are broadcast on television all over the country and it gives a fascinating look into how war looked like back in the time of the American Revolution. It is always a good thing for every nation to take pride it the events that formed it and when people celebrate Patriot’s Day in the US they are showing their pride in the history and their desire to not let that history fade away. With so many large public events tied to Patriot’s Day in the US it is highly unlikely that it will be fading away any time soon especially when once every few years Patriot’s Day in the US can help get a large portion of the US population an extension on filing their federal tax returns. There is nothing like a few extra hours to file your taxes to make a patriot out of anyone.
