Places to Date for Long Island City Singles

Added: 09/05/2006

Long Island City singles can too easily fall into the jaded pattern of dating in the same set of trendy restaurants, cinemas, and night clubs. Why not take time to explore Long Island City through fresh eyes, to visit the places that draw the admiration of people from far away? Combining the dating safety of public venues with the ease of conversation in interesting settings, some "tourist attractions" offer ideal opportunities for the perfect date.

Dating is risky business. First and foremost, Long Island City singles who venture into the dating scene must make safety a priority, eschewing secluded getaways for the better bet of meeting a date in a public place. Beyond that basic common sense, however, lies a world of decisions to be made. Should the date be the traditional dinner-and-a-movie? Is it too soon to invite a dating partner to Aunt Fran’s wedding? What kind of setting can nurture a developing relationship, foster romance, and provide plain old fun all at the same time?

Surprisingly, some of the best settings for dates are not the expected trendy restaurants and nightclubs. And, conversations starters can be found that are even better than sharing the latest blockbuster movie at the cinema. Where can Long Island City singles find some of these options? Here are a few ideas to start the creativity flowing:

•What could be more romantic than a lighthouse? The Montauk Point lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in the state, will be hosting a lovely inclusive winter holiday celebration December 2nd and 3rd of this year, but the museum offers a nice conversation-friendly venue for dates long before then. The $7 admission price keeps the date affordable, too. And, who knows? Since Montauk Point also does weddings, a first date here could well lead to the perfect plan for a wedding remembering that first meeting! If Montauk Point whets any Long Island City singles’ appetites for lighthouses, there’s also the Horton Point Lighthouse and Nautical Museum for a future date.

•Lighthouses are romantic, but so are carousels . . . and the Empire State Carousel Museum, a handcrafted tribute to New York, is even more so than most. Troubles with the landlord have temporarily closed the building, but Long Island singles should keep an eye out for the reopening—certain to be accomplished with enough fanfare to make for an entertaining date!

•The Corwith Windmill offers another unusual destination for Long Island City singles seeking the perfect date. It was moved here in 1813, thirteen years after its construction in Sag Harbor. Tours are offered by appointment at any time of year, and admission is by donation.

•If all of these seem like a rather sedate idea of fun, perhaps the more adventure-minded Long Island City singles would enjoy a daylong date at Splish Splash Water Park. With 96 acres of unique water attractions and thrilling rides, there’s no time for boredom . . . and there are worse things than getting to hang out with your date in swim suits! At $32 per person the entry price can seem a little steep, but a season pass purchased now for $100 will be good all next year, too.

Perhaps any given Long Island City single won’t be drawn to any of these, and that’s all right. The important idea is to think beyond the worn-out dating scene and explore magical new places with a great companion. Check out the tourist pamphlets (free in almost any hotel lobby), look for upcoming community events listed in the newspaper, and have fun!
