Historic, humorous, delicious and never boring - Philadelphia dating proves true the city's new motto "The City That Loves You Back".; Philadelphia (or "Philly", as the locals call it) is not only chock full of things to do, but you never know who you're going to meet once you get there. So, if your partner turns out to be a dud, at least the date itself won't be dull. Philly has just opened a "Gayborhood", which might be a nod and a wink to the city's old motto "The City of Brotherly Love".
Driving is not recommended in Philly, unless you are already familiar with the area. But Philly has a thorough and mostly dependable public transportation system. And there are always plenty of taxis and even horse drawn carriages eager for your patronage. You don’t even need a date beforehand before your trip. Bring money, a sense of playfulness and your common sense, and Philadelphia dating will be fun and safe.
Center City is the most recommended area for having fun in Philadelphia. Dating locations are well populated, well lit and receive the most stops from SEPTA, the city’s public transportation system. If you’re not sure where you are, ask the SEPTA worker, policeman or even the worker behind the counter at Starbucks. Philadelphians meet plenty of tourists and respect them. The City encourages this, as it greatly needs the money any out of town singles could bring. It even recently put up rainbow colored signs to let you know this is a town friendly to gays and lesbians.
Use your common sense traveling any place for dating, whether it is in Philadelphia or somewhere else. Limit your alcohol consumption. Bring a cell phone, pager or have a signal call planned with someone you can trust, just to let them know you are safe. Don’t go into dark alleys and don’t take candy (be it literal or metaphorical) from strangers. Only have one form of I.D. on you incase you get robbed or lose your wallet.
So, where to go? Philadelphia has one of the world’s best zoos, as well as world-class theatre, orchestra, restaurants and lots of museums. A museum for a date? Of course! There are lots of dark secluded nooks in many Philadelphia museums. Just walking around Center City is a treat – there are parks, food venders and sculptures to admire. Two of the city’s most beloved sculptures are also the most eccentric – one is of a giant clothespin, and the other is of the word “Love”. The latter sculpture can be found in the appropriately named Love Park.
The Art Museum is a great place for Philadelphia dating. You know the Art Museum – ever see the film Rocky? The steps Sylvester Stallone runs up are the same Art Museum steps that are there today. I think I’m the only person in the world who’s never run up the steps singing the Rocky theme. You’ll see plenty of other people doing it. The Art Museum has beautiful and thought-provoking art, from classical to modern. My favorite painting is there. It’s called “The Four In Hand” by Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins, and is a massive photo realistic oil of a carriage pulled by gleaming bay horses. Then, you can take your date to the cafй or restaurant there to round the date off, or to fuel up for more sight seeing.
Philadelphia dating is enhanced by food. There are sections in town called Chinatown and Little Italy, where succulent Chinese and Italian food can be found at various places and prices. The Reading Terminal Market is always full of surprises, great food and unique gift ideas. There are some foods considered uniquely Philly – soft pretzels with mustard, a cheesesteak sandwich which has to be tasted to be believed, and another sandwich called a “hoagie”—loaded with deli meats, cheeses, Italian spices and the unique Philly roll from Amaroso’s Bakery. The hoagie actually has more calories than a cheesesteak (which is chopped beef, cheese, onions and tomato sauce). They are big enough to share.
Events are always changing, which makes Philadelphia dating a fun experience – even if you’re by yourself! The local newspapers’ Friday editions tend to list all the events for that weekend. There are many websites about Philadelphia dating events, and even the Philadelphia Tourist Board will try to help you plan your next great date.
Yo – see you in Philly!
