Internet slang is used every day by both people of the internet and people who text message with their cellular phones. People use internet jargon to shorten the amount of characters needed to say a particular thing. When we use internet jargon it is just like when we are talking in real life and use slang sentences. This type of jargon can be many different things, but it is usually represented by abbreviations and/or single letters that when said sounds like a word. Internet jargon sounds confusing, but after you learn the meanings of this slang you will see how much time it saves you when typing messages on the internet.
Of course, there are other ways to use internet jargon when online. Another popular way to use internet slang is to let one letter represent an entire word. This works best for words that you use a lot and sound like a letter. For instance, you could type the letter “u” to represent the word “you.” As you can see, when you say that letter, it sound just like saying the word. This also works for the word “are” by typing the letter “r.” Over the course of an email you can see how much time this would begin to save you. Another one of these would be the use of the letter “b” to represent “be.” There many more of these types of slang letters, but I think you get the gist of it.
When all is said and done, the most popular type of internet jargon would have to be abbreviations. People use internet jargon in this manner mainly when playing online games or conversing in a chat room. These abbreviations are used to represent phrases that are used continuously. For example, if some makes you laugh online, instead of typing that you are “laughing out loud,”you could simply type “lol.” When typing this online, people who understand how to use internet jargon would automatically know what you are saying. This works for a lot more phrases such as “brb” which means “be right back,” or even “ttyl” which is short for “talk to you later.” See, many people online were using these phrases continuously and over and over. Coming up this abbreviation system allowed them to get a message across much faster.
Internet slang is a very important part to online chatting and messaging. In this day and age, we are all about speed and how fast we can get something done. So, it is no surprise to me that we have developed and adopted a form of short hand writing for online chatting. Unfortunately, many people have bad attitudes when chatting online. People who do not understand internet jargon are constantly being referred to as a “noob.” This is a classic case of stereo typing a group of people. It is sad that even online people are treated differently and not all referred to in the same way.
