Paprika, Xanthe or Zalake? Names Unusual Are All The Rage

Added: 10/11/2005

A lot of parents are trying to find unusual baby names for their newborns. When it comes to names, unusual choices are the order of the day. Whether the inspiration comes from a place, something in nature, a color, a surname or an old-fashioned name or whether parents choose to make up their own name, many are looking for something that will set their child apart.

Many parents today are looking for a truly unique and original name for their newborns. But whereas a few years ago Mackenzie, Taylor and Liam were considered more unusual baby name choices, they are now included in the list of most popular baby names across the country. For baby names unusual choices include naming your child after a place, a color, something from nature and even a product. If you are looking for rare names or unusual baby names, here are a few suggestions of areas to consider.

Places
Is there a specific place that is special for you and your partner? A big trend right now is naming your child after a specific location. Names in this category include Aspen, Cairo, India, Ireland, Kenya, Paris, Siena, Vienna, Salem, Camden, Cuba and London.

Nature
You might consider rare names that are inspired by something in nature - be it flowers, trees, spices or other nature inspired names. You might consider Clover, Poppy, Fern, Woods, Basil, Sage, Sky, Storm, Finch, Echo or Lark or even something more exotic like Paprika, Dune, Tansy, Sequoia, Juniper or Tarragon.  With some of these names unusual as they are, you'll be sure that none of your child's friends will have the same or a similar name.

Colors
Different or offbeat colors could provide you with just what you're looking for in a rare baby name.  Consider something like Amethyst, Indigo, Lilac, Scarlett, Teal, Auburn, Sienna or Xanthe (meaning yellow).

Surname as First Name
This might be nice if there are some surnames on one side or the other that you would like to keep in the family. It is often a nice tribute to parents or grandparents and a more unusual choice than just using their first names. For parents considering surname names unusual choices might be Flannery, Harper, Sloane, Bronte, Crosby, Decker, Jameson, Monroe, Lyndon or Kingsley.

Old-Fashioned or Time Period Names
Names that were once popular, but which are not so commonly heard now, but might an excellent choice for your new addition. These types of names include Ada, Camille, Clara, Etta, Miriam, Pearl and Viola for girls and Alastiar, Braxton, Conrad, Emmett, Silas and Tobias.

Names From Around the World
You might also consider picking a name that comes from your culture or a name from another culture that has significant meaning for you. For example, you might like Hoa which is Vietnamese for flower or maybe Eunae which means kindness and love in Korean or maybe even Sage which means wisdom, Kalah which is Hawaiian for the sunshine, Malachi which means "my angel" in Hebrew or Zalika which means noble or well-born in Swahili might also be unusual baby names to consider.

Made-Up Names
If you're feeling particularly creative, you can make up your own baby names.  Then again if you like the idea of a made-up name, but can't think of anything or you don't like what you've come up with, you can search online for some names that other people have made up. If you are having trouble deciding between two or three of your favourites, you might even be able to merge and combine them for something really original. Here is a sampling: Aleara, Braelyn, Cayala, Donita, Elara, Xerin, Zeric, Jolissa, Kelisha, Tashanna, Shailyn, Ryla, Mirella and Zaryn.  Also consider Talut, Emelda, Brinlynn and Estin - for these names unusual in nature might be exactly what you need to set your child apart.

For parents choosing newborn names unusual choices are quite a trend these days. Keep in mind though that since choosing a rare name is trendy, you might not actually achieve the uniqueness you desire unless you put the effort into finding a name that is really off the radar.
