Today you can find everything on the internet from coloring pages of your child's favorite television show to sexual explicit images. What can we, the parents, do to keep our children safe from not only images and articles they should not see, but also away from child predators. What can we do to protect our children's safety? It is our job to learn all there is to learn about the internet and what we can do to protect our children.

Parents in today’s society must do all we can to protect our children's safety. This entails things such as putting things out of reach of little ones to not letting our child into an R rated movie until we feel they are of the proper age to view the explicit content they would see in such a film. One of the most difficult places to protect our children from is the internet. More and more schools today our teaching our children about computers and how to use the internet. The adults are trying their best to keep up with the ever changing technology to keep up with our children. It is our job to protect them from whatever, even whomever, they would encounter while surfing the internet.

While some children only use the internet for school purposes, such as doing research for a school project, others enjoy countless hours of surfing the internet. Some maybe checking on the latest sport stats of their favorite teams while others maybe looking up that new movie they heard about to see when and where it is playing. There are those children who are entering websites that show sexual explicit images and articles. How can we protect our children from seeing such images? There is software now available to help you in preventing your children’s safety by offering software which can prevent your child from going to such websites. This type of software can filter the content your child is viewing by keywords or particular web pages. They will also protect your child from the pop-up blocks that can come up on the screen with sexual content. You as the parent can control what they are allowed to view, warned against or blocked.

Another internet child safety concern is chat rooms. Children see this as another way of making friends but don’t realize the danger that could potential be lurking ahead. This has become a foremost concern for parents today as there are sexual predators who pretend to be children or teens and will start up a conversation with possibly your own child. They try to gain their friendship and lure them out of their homes into their own territory. Our children's safety is at great risk with chat rooms as they believe they are going to meet a peer, but instead it is someone who could do a great deal of harm to our child.

There is no technological way for us to protect our children from chat rooms; however you can try to set your mind at easy by using software that gives you a more secure environment as well as setting some ground rules with your child. There is software that can be used with your instant messenger that will protect your system from hackers, predators, and vandals. It also will provide you with total control over the instant messaging. Because your children's safety is a high priority you should set some good guidelines for you child to follow when they are in a chat room. Make sure they keep their identity anonymous. This includes not telling anyone where they live, what their phone number is, or what school they attend. The most important rule is to never agree to meet someone if they ask to meet.

By following these guidelines you are able to help in protecting your children's safety for what is out across the internet. You might not be able to win all the battles, but this will help give you a fighting chance.
