Options for Creative Dating in McLean

Added: 09/05/2006

With the public relations people proclaiming, "Virginia is for lovers!" on signs and advertisements around the country, dating in McLean ought to be an easy matter. While some singles might disagree, and it might not be any easier to find a date here than elsewhere, there are certainly ample options for what to do once a dating partner is discovered. A few simple guidelines help identify some surprising settings for perfect dates in McLean.

Dating in McLean, like dating anywhere else, means more than finding the right person with whom to share a few hours a week. Unlike many other places, McLean is fortunate enough to offer many diverse possibilities to encourage couples looking for love. If the dating partner is a reasonably enjoyable companion, the venue is often the determining factor in the success or failure of a date—especially in the early stages of a relationship.

So, what makes for a good date in McLean?

First, the location for early dates should be kept relatively public. This choice makes for safer dating and reduces the sexual pressure sometimes felt in more private places. Public venues can still offer opportunities for private conversation, but they make scary incidents or relationship-killing premature physical intimacy far less likely.

Secondly, a good date location encourages conversation and provides interesting things to discuss. While most people have noticed that watching a movie together can feed dinner conversation afterward, too many people settle into the traditional dinner-and-a-movie date so often that they miss out on other wonderful opportunities. Significantly, the dates that stand out as incredible memories are often those that were a little different from the usual.

In McLean and surrounding areas of Fairfax County, community events offer a variety of novel date experiences. For example, a walking tour of Mount Vernon—enjoying the gardens and landscape or even learning about the history of slave life—offers plenty to discuss whether it’s the first date or the fiftieth. The Fall Wine Festival and Sunset Tour, coming in October, offer a particularly ideal setting for romance.

Many people think of the Filene Center at Wolf Trap as a place for big-name concerts, and of course it’s hosted everyone from the Beach Boys to B. B. King this summer, but some of its events are more unique, too. For example, on September 9 Wolf Trap will offer “Face of America: Hawai'i.” Virginia.org describes this event, saying, “Connect with a culture thousands of years old, a proud native people, and the spirit of aloha through traditional and contemporary music, hula, and spectacular HD video footage of the natural beauty of the islands.” Admission can be had for as little as $10, so this opportunity for romance is more affordable than are some of the big-ticket bands that play the center.

For a completely different dating experience in McLean, why not learn how to process flax plants into beautiful fiber? Does that sound ridiculous? Perhaps it is—but there’s the potential for a nice metaphor in watching a simple plant transform into linen thread, and to being a part of the transformation. The three-hour program is available Thursday afternoons from now through October 7, and at only $3 per person it’s a clear winner in terms of cost.

For a less back-to-basics evening out, start in McLean and head over to Springfield to try the murder mystery dinner show “Murder Medium, Rare.” The $15 ticket price includes dinner, a raffle, and music as well as the show, and the interactive whodunit provides the perfect opportunity to collaborate with a date to try to solve the mystery.

There are so many opportunities for creative dating in McLean that all it takes is an open mind and a few minutes to check the upcoming events listed in the newspaper to find the perfect unconventional setting for romance to blossom. Check out the Capitol Home and Remodeling Expo in Chantilly, cheer the Herndon Homecoming Parade, or stroll through the Autumn 18th Century Market Fair right here in McLean (October 21-22). Whatever you choose, don’t feel limited to dinner and a movie!
