Operation Party Halloween

Ever since I was a little kid Halloween parties have always been so lame. Most of the guys don't even get dressed up because they're "too cool" and the girls all wear the same costume. They either dress up like a cat or a mouse or some cute little animal with a furry little tail. Every Halloween was the same story. We dressed up in stupid little outfits and ran around the neighborhood searching for chocolate. But this year was something different. It was our freedom. It was Operation Party Halloween!
It was the first time in my life that Halloween fell on a Sunday. Every other year it always landed during the week and we had to go to school before causing absolute mayhem in the neighborhood. I slept in that day because like I said, it was a Sunday and I always sleep in on Sundays. Anyway, the ringing of the doorbell woke me up from this dream I was having about Samantha. She’s the girl in my chemistry class who sits in front of me. Today she must have used a new conditioner because her hair smelt different. So I got to the door and gave the kids some M&Ms and tiny bite-size Snickers bars. That’s when the telephone rang.

It was my best friend Jimmy calling to confirm that the Halloween party at his house was still on. He wanted me to gather up some supplies to decorate the house with orange and black paper which is always a good color combo on Halloween. I also had to get some Halloween party invitations to put in the mailboxes of everyone we knew. Jimmy even named the party. He called it, “Operation Party Halloween.”

Operation Party Halloween means a number of things. It means that we are sick and tired of dressing up like elves and warlocks just to go around the neighborhood searching for candy and trouble. Operation Party Halloween was our independence. It was our one night of freedom from parents and from silly string.

People started coming at around nine o’clock and Jimmy was worried that no one would show up. He got on his T-Mobile Sidekick and sent out a mass email to all of his friends that Operation Party Halloween was up and running.

By eleven o’clock things were starting to get cooking. Most of the people were getting wasted and Jimmy and I were soaking up the atmosphere. That’s when things took a turn for the worst. When Jimmy sent out the mass email to his friends he accidentally forwarded a copy his parents. He was certain that he took his parents addresses out of the message but now they were pissed and were turning around to come home from Atlantic City.

Jimmy made the announcement that Operation Party Halloween was officially terminated. Frank Geneseo refused to leave and he made outrageous accusations that the entire party was one big conspiracy for us to make some money. People began to protest and refused to leave the house. Jimmy didn’t know what to do because his parents were an hour away and he had three hundred people in his backyard. So I ran into the garage and found the sprinkler system and activated it. Water squirted all over the yard and all over the crowd. The girls screamed and ran into the street and most of the guys followed.

Jack Rosenberg was running through the yard on his way out when he slipped on the wet grass and cracked his head on a rock. Jimmy ran over to see if he was conscious but he wasn’t. “I think he’s dead,” Jimmy said with a concerned look.

“He’s not dead,” I said. “But we have to get him to the hospital.” We picked him up and rushed him into the house to try and wake him up. After five minutes he was still unconscious so we devised a plan. I would take him to the hospital and stay with him while Jimmy cleaned everything up. But as we were on our way out the door holding Jack’s bleeding skull Samantha came to the door. She said that she heard about the Operation Party Halloween on her Side Kick and thought she should stop by. Jimmy looked me in the eye and he said, “I’ll take Jack. You two stay and clean up.”

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“Positive. Besides, Jack let me cheat off of him in math class so I owe it to him.” Jimmy took Jack to the hospital and he came back to consciousness. He asked what happened and Jimmy told him that he slipped on a rock.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Samantha and I were just about done cleaning up. “Well, this has been a fun night so far,” Samantha said sarcastically. I laughed and we both exchanged a smile. I told her she had to leave before Jimmy’s parents got home and she kissed me goodnight right on the lips. “Sorry,” she said. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time.”

Today, Jack’s head is completely healed and Jimmy’s parents believe that the email about the party was a joke. They are taking another vacation on New Year’s Eve and Jimmy plans on throwing a party called Operation New Year’s Eve. Samantha and I are officially dating.
