It is written in the history, that the origin of the Olympic games dates back to 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece and was celebratd until AD 393 with much pomp and splendor. Even in those days as found in the ancient chronicles, the opening of the Olympic games was used to be venerated through a lots of ways. In the modern age, the International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 on the initiative of a French nobleman, Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin. Under the inspiration of the International Olympic Committee or the IOC, the Olympic Games, after a lull of several centuries, were inaugurated as Summer Olympics in 1896, Athens, Greece. Even at that time the opening of the Olympic Games was also celebrated with a great energy and passion. It is to be noted, from that time the saga of participation in the Olympic Games has increased to include athletes from nearly all nations worldwide. With the improvement of satellite communications and global telecasts of the events, the Olympics are consistently gaining supporters, and with gaining of more attention the opening of the Olympic Games is grasping most innovative dimensions! For instance, the most recent Summer Olympics were the 2004 Games in Athens and the most recent Winter Olympics were the 2006 Games in Turin. But it should be remembered, that in each and every Olympic Games, there exists a striking similarity among the orgainsing nations, apart from the number of events in various sports. This exists in the saga of the opening of the games. It should be kept in mind that apart from the traditional elements, the host nation ordinarily presents artistic displays of dance and theatre representative of that country. In fact, various sorts of traditional elements frame the opening ceremonies of a celebration of the Olympic Games. The ceremonies in a typical manner start with the hoisting of the host country's flag and the performance of its national anthem. While the traditional part of the ceremonies starts with a "parade of nations" (or of athletes), during which most participating athletes march into the stadium, country by country, the highest dignitaries of various countries are found to be present glore in the podium. One honoured athlete, at best a top competitor, from each country carries the flag of his or her nation, leading the entourage of other athletes from that country.

It is also a part of the tradition, that in the opening of the Olympic Games where it is held at each and every time, starting from the 1928 Sumer Olympics, Greece marches first. Reason? This is a privilege that this nation enjoys, because of its historical status as the origin of the Olympics, while the host nation marches last. Between these two nations, all other participating nations march in alphabetical order of the dominant language of the host country or in French or English alphabetical order if the host country does not write its dominant language in an alphabet which has a set order. It is only after the entrance of all the participating nations, that the President the host country's Olympic Organising Committee makes a speech, followed by the IOC president who, at the end of his speech introduces the person who is going to declare the Games open. It is also a matter of convention that the Head of the State of the organising country happens to be the Opener. And with the reciting of the formula, "I declare open the Games of ... (name of the host city) celebrating the ... (number of the Olympiad) Olympiad of the modern era., the opening of the Olympic Games ends and it gets opened for the greatest display of human brilliance in the international arena of sports, on earth!
