If you watch enough television these days you are probably noticing that there are a lot on internet jokes that are making it into the regular rotations of some of these comedy television shows. Jay Leno has a segment once in a while where he used to feature a funny clip from the internet and VH1 used to have an entire show dedicated to the best internet humor. It is good stuff and it does not look like it will be ending any time soon.
The advent of the website Youtube has brought us countless examples of online humor that was never intended to be online humor but wound up being perceived as that anyways. Probably the best example of this is the story of Chris Crocker. Chris Crocker is a very disturbed young man that posted a rant on Youtube after Britney Spears’ failed attempt at a comeback recently. His rant is a very emotional appeal to the fans and the media to leave Britney Spears alone but the way it comes off is extremely comical as Crocker cries throughout the 2 minute piece and screams that people should just leave Britney alone. He doesn’t mean for it to be a joke, he means it to be very serious, but it is extremely funny to watch and because of this over 3 million people have seen some version of the Chris Crocker meltdown on the internet and countless more have seen it on television. As with any unintentionally funny piece of online humor there are now dozens of copycats out there all making fun of Chris Crocker and trying to capture their own online humor at his expense. In the end it may be Crocker that winds up laughing because millions of viewers on the internet usually translates into something offered to that person on television. Of course it is a lot funnier on the internet but that has never stopped television before.
Another good source of online humor are internet message boards. If you sign up for a message board and follow it long enough you will eventually find some pretty classic online humor there. You have to find the right message board though and experience says that message boards about music for a local region usually generate the best online humor. Musicians seem to have the best sense of humor but also seem to be the most vicious to outsiders that try and join “their” message board and it is always funny to watch a group of insecure musicians try and run someone off the board. Message boards are a great way to kill time while you are on break at work or bored at home and they are a never ending source of new comedy material. The more cynical the population of a board is the better the material so make sure you scout through a lot of message boards before you join one. Usually the general discussion message boards are the best. Message board that specialize in a particular field are usually filled with people that think they are experts in that field and that is never great online humor. The general population having general conversations can make for some great online humor.
