Online Divorce May Cost More In The Long Run

An online divorce is often cheaper and faster than a traditional analog divorce involving court dates and pricey lawyers. However, just because it is quicker and cheaper in the short-term doesn't mean that an online divorce is the right choice for you. Before you take the plunge, look into your states divorce laws, or read a divorce book or two to get a feel for what you may be missing by taking an online shortcut. Sometimes an experience divorce lawyer will be able to get you a great settlement, an opportunity which you may be passing up by choosing an online divorce.

A lot of couples are looking for quick, easy, uncomplicated ways to separate legally and permanently, so it is not much of a surprise that there is a lot of interest in undergoing divorce proceedings online.  With every states divorce rate skyrocketing these days, all across America people are turning to online divorce services to get the job done quickly and at minimum expense.  Divorce is such an inherently stressful event for both parties involved, it is no wonder that the field of online divorce is growing as unhappy married couples looking to separate consider the fastest, cheapest way to legally split up.  However, it is important to consider some factors beyond mere convenience and price when contemplating whether to go about an online divorce.

Many sites say that they can complete divorce paperwork on short notice for seemingly impossibly low fees.  If you look at a divorce book to see different states divorce laws and forms, you will see that divorce is a complicated legal proceeding.  Even by looking at the crowded shelf of books offering information about divorce you will start to get a sense of how complicated divorces are.  People interested in finding inexpensive ways to end their marriages may turn to these written guides, but will quickly discover that a divorce book can be very intimidating.  Hence, the appeal of an online divorce, wherein it seems that somebody else does all of the legal legwork and you and your partner basically just sign on the dotted line.

However, even if you choose to pursue an online divorce as the legal solution to your separation, you will discover that isn't just a matter of pointing your mouse and clicking a button marked "divorce."  Even if you go through an online divorce, you will still need to interact with the court system in an off-line way to get the procedure finalized.  However, depending on your states divorce laws, you may be able to complete the final stages of your divorce proceeding by mail, and won't have to spend a day in court or deal with a crowd of expensive lawyers.

However, although an online divorce is quicker and cheaper, you may still want to consider an old-fashioned analog divorce.  Depending on your situation, you might actually find that hiring an experienced divorce lawyer to negotiate your divorce settlement for you will save you money in the long run, and a penny saved is a penny earned.  You might be able to get the upper hand in your divorce by bringing on a legal expert who knows the loopholes and quirks of your states divorce system backwards and forwards.

Just because doing your divorce online is quicker and cheaper in the short-term doesn't mean that it is the best choice for everyone in every divorce situation.  Before you decide on an online divorce, make sure you've considered the potential pitfalls.  Your partner may not have your best interests as heart when they suggest an online divorce, so take some time to research your states divorce laws and procedures before you agree to pursuing a divorce over the internet. 

An online divorce might not be the best thing for your specific circumstance, so consider speaking to a good lawyer before you commit to an online divorce.
