Online chat rooms are the online forums, on which people can chat online (which mean they broadcast messages to other people in real time). Sometimes online chat rooms are moderated by limiting those who are allowed to speak (which is uncommon). Sometimes, volunteer moderators watch over the chat to prevent disruptive and anyway undesirable behavior from the users.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is one of the oldest ways for people online to communicate with each other in real time. Using a piece of chat software, a user can log onto an IRC server and select from many 'channels,' each one functioning as an online chat room. Because of its age (the system has been around since 1988) IRC is considered difficult to use by many people, and compared to modern chat software (instant messaging software) IRC chat software is far from user friendly.
