The heyday of the bulletin board system was in the mid to late 80s and the early 90s. A bbs was a system where an operator, referred to as a sysop, would set a system on his or her home computer where a receiving modem allowed other users to call in and connect. Besides the ability to leave messages, which was of course the most popular activity on bulletin board systems and the reason for their names, there was door play, where a user could play 'door' games.

I think many people will remember the old games that could be played where there was no world to view, but only a DOS screen that had wave after wave of text. These door games were the breakthrough of that time and added many hours to people's time spent on the computers. All around the globe these games were the pinnacle of computer games. These games are now appearing on BBS websites and are as popular as ever.
