Before the World Wide Web became as common in people's homes as a carton of milk, the bulletin board systems were incredibly popular. The bbs as it was commonly known, provided an accessible way to meet other people, have discussions and more. Like all fads, bulletin board systems were just one step along the internet evolutionary chain. Because a person had to dial into a bbs with a phone line, and even pay long distance charges for out-of-local-area systems, the bbs soon lost is grasp on the public's interest.
