Not only are there a lot of festivals in Texas, there are some unusual festivals in Texas! Of course, there are numerous best Texas festivals according to each city or town that hosts them! One of the most original is the Charros Days festival that is held in Brownsville Texas each year. The festival is put on each February and dates back to 1938, and is known as one of the oldest festivals in Texas. Charros Days is all about parades, dances, and fun events that are suitable for the entire family.
Dickens on the Strand is another great festival that can be experienced in Texas. This festival has been staged for three decades and features the characters from Charles Dickens' novels strolling along the Galveston Strand during the month of December. The festival is really unique because it allows visitors to take a step back in time to the Victorian ages. Street vendors push carts, there are carolers, street musicians, and even a petting zoo for the children to enjoy! What fun! This is definitely one of the most unique of the festivals in Texas.
Perhaps the most bizarre of the festivals in Texas is the Great Texas Mosquito Festival. Texas is very well known for their giant sized mosquitoes (they really do everything bigger!) so they have decided they might as well celebrate them. The festival features a BBQ cook off as well as a fajita cook off. Others will enjoy a paintball tournament, karaoke, and a Mosquito Chase Run. This is perhaps the only thing related to the mosquito that is fun and something to look forward to!
The Rattlesnake Roundup is one of the best Texas festivals. There are many different festivals by this name, but the one spoken of here is the official, the one and only! This festival has been around since the 1960's and is a lot of fun for the whole family. A carnival and a midway keep the children busy while the adults all go out and look for snakes. By the end of the festival hundreds of snakes will have been rounded up. For those that do not want to participate in the snake round up, they can take in an arts and crafts show as well as musicians that love to frequent this great festival.
Another festival that just has to be mentioned is the State Fair of Texas. This is a festival that is a testament to the fact that everything truly is bigger in Texas. The State Fair of Texas is big and a lot of fun. The festival lasts three weeks and is located in Dallas and features a carnival, art shows, an auto show, livestock shows, and the Red River Shoot-Out played between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma football games!
Of course, this is my no means the extent of great festivals in Texas; this is just a glance at some of the great experiences that can be had in Texas.
