We've all heard or read about the pregnancy hormone that is supposed to be "the cure" for weight loss in obese people. Since the time hormones have been used to "fatten" up the beef cattle to bring more money at the market, humans have been disadvantaged in that we are the ones who ultimately ingest those hormones, making us "fatten" up. Are the advantages of hormone therapy worth it when it comes to a life-threatening disease?
People whose tumors are positive for hormone receptors can use hormone therapy to reduce the risk of cancer returning. This is done by using the hormone therapy to block the effect of estrogen or to at least reduce the effects of estrogen levels, which will reduce the reoccurrence risk.
The advantages of hormone therapy most certainly would out weigh the risks, right? Someone facing a choice between the advantages of hormone therapy and the risk of surgeries, chemotherapy treatments, etc may not agree. Living life will be all together different now. In fact, one might not feel they are living life at all. Traipsing back and forth between doctor’s offices and hospitals, needles and pills and all the while trying to decipher the “doctor talk” about what is actually going on can wear a person down. As if depression wasn’t prevalent in cancer patients as it is! The advantages of hormone therapy would actually be to experience an extension of life; but what if life isn’t living?
Many people who have had the misfortune to experience cancers of any type feel as if the life they are being forced to live is not an advantage of hormone therapy. Medications are taken in mass quantities and injections are given all in an effort to prolong one’s life. While some may not understand or agree, wanting to die just to stop having to put up with all that a cancer patient must endure may seem to be the more attractive advantage.
Wigs, weakness, proneness to diseases, even colds, and the constant bad efforts at condolences are in such stark contrast to the way life used to be for those suffering from all types of cancers. Who wants to live like that? Many people want to and their fights against the number one killer in America are inspirational and cause others not to give up. Preaching the advantages of hormone replacement therapy, these strong-willed individuals are the cornerstones of determination and dedication; dedication to themselves and their families and determination not to give into a killer.
Trying to decide what treatment options are available to you and picking the right one for your own individual situation means gathering a lot of information. Trying to sift through medical information can be tricky. Make sure that you do some research one your own, consult with others suffering with the same or similar complications you are and find a support person or group to bounce questions off of. These steps will help make life feel like it is being lived again. The advantages of hormone therapy and the associated risks of making such a treatment decision are only advantages if they offer you back the life you’ve known.
