When the girls were small, there wasn't much money to go around. Christmas time was a burden on the family and there often weren't many presents under the tree. If each girl got two gifts, it was a good Christmas. One particular year, the mother had an idea. Instead of giving toys, she made Christmas dresses for her girls. Explaining that they had a party to go to, each girl carefully and proudly put on their new dresses and presented themselves before their mother.
“There is a very special party going on right now and we’ve been invited to come”, the mother explains. As she continues to tell the girls about the party, she explains that Christmas is Jesus’ birthday celebration and that he has invited them to come and celebrate along with him. As they enter the church, everyone greets them, hands them a candle and as the preacher begins to talk, the girls understand why their mother gave them new Christmas dresses and Christmas hats. Everyone, including their mother, was dressed in a special dress and although the girls were the only ones with cardboard birthday hats strung under their chins, everyone who saw them smiled warmly.
The preacher began, “Christmas dresses can be very expensive. Marshal Fields, Boston Proper, and Elder Beerman all run special sales during the months of November and December knowing that there are numerous company parties, black tie events and family parties that require top notch dresses. Whatever type of party the dress is worn to, it will stand out among the rest. To some, this is very important. Even though he was the reason for the party, Jesus came to his own celebration in rags. He wanted everyone to know that he was there for them, that his gift of love could not be seen in his physical beauty or in the clothes he wore or in the fancy house decorated to the nines. His celebration began as he took the first step in saving the relationships with man that he would invite everyone to have with him as he left the throne of heaven to come down to earth as little baby. His death on the cross and resurrection was the ultimate gift; there is none other worth so much or as long lasting as the gift of life. As you exchange gifts this Christmas season, remember that it’s not what’s under the tree that is important, it’s what’s inside your heart.”
Christmas dresses range in price and offer different looks for the holiday season. Some Christmas dresses are fancy with lots of sequins and beads. Others are more contemporary and stylish with classic lines and soft colors. Make sure you always display one look - no matter what time of year it is, the look of love. Don’t wait on Christmas to wear your Christmas hat. Let people know that you celebrate Jesus’ gift to you each and every day. Help them to know that they can put on their own Christmas dress and Christmas hat and join in the celebration; all they need to do is come!
