Naked Wales - Morfa Dyffryn

Added: 10/13/2006

If you were asked where you would expect to find an acclaimed nudist beach in the United Kingdom it is doubtful that Morfa Dyffryn would be your immediate response. Surrounded by peaceful dunes and grassland Morfa Dyffryn beach is located on the Welsh coast following the shoreline for a little more than a mile with about a kilometre dedicated to the pursuit of naturism.

Morfa Harlech a Morfa Dyffryn (Morfa Harlech and Morfa Dyffryn) is one of two north Wales sites that lend themselves to the naturist activity because of their isolation and the fact that they are encompassed within the Snowdonia National Park. In addition as if to help maintain Morfa Drffryn in isolation the Welsh weather not often associated with sunshine tends to discourage the less than serious naturists. However, weather permitting, which it does more often than some might have you believe, and Morfa Drffryn is a spectacularly enjoyable retreat for naturist, especially since 2000 the local authority designated a specific section of beach for naturists making this one of the few official naturists beaches in the United Kingdom.

Located between Barmouth and Harlech (on the A496), south of Dyffryn Ardudwy village the beach is signposted along the Ffordd y Benar road and there’s no mistake that you’ve arrived because it’s where the road ends, conveniently at a carpark. Facilities include public toilets before a short walk across the dunes with signs indicating the direction to find the beach. It is worthwhile noting that you should keep to the designated route identified by the sign-posts it is possible to become disorientated on the dunes and get yourself lost even though the sound of the sea can be clearly heard. Camper vans and touring caravans are prohibited at the Dyffryn Seaside Estate while the rental of a static van is available within the estate.

If you prefer to travel by train Morfa Drffryn can be reached using the Shrewsbury-Machynlleth-Pwllhei railway which stops close to the beach.

Although never crowded the white sandy beach at Morfa Dyffryn has been known to attract up to 500 naturists during warm summer periods. The beach appears clean while the sea is generally gentle with the tide not slipping back too far so the walk to the water never gets tiring. In addition the beach is of a sufficient length for anyone seeking privacy to find it. The atmosphere on the beach is very relaxed as would be expected at an official naturist beach with families and couples in attendance.

It would be remiss not to mention the complaints about some of the sexual predatory behaviour displayed by a few male visitors to the beach over the past six years. However, it is worthy of note that incidents involving these sad people has declined and although not completely cleared, it is no longer a regular experience to come across this type of nuisance. Morfa Dyffryn will never stop attracting anyone with an intention to upset others as unfortunately, does the naturist pursuit. This disappointing link between naturists and perverts possesses just one similarity, the naked human body.

Fortunately the Welsh are able to ignore the unsavoury element that seems to fester on the fringes of any activity that reveals even a modest portion of human flesh and bravely steps forward to welcome what is after all a very natural pursuit. Enjoy naturism in Wales, the Welsh do.
