Muskau park is the biggest and the most famous English style park to date. Muskau park is the biggest public park in Germany and Poland, Muskau park roughly covers 5.45 km of land on both sides of the Lusatian Neisse river. The history of Muskau park dates back to nearly 200 years ago, the founder of muskau park was Prince Hermann von Puckler-Muskau of Bad Muskau, he was the owner of these lands. The Prince went to England, in 1815 and on his return ordered that an English style park should be built in Germany. The construction of this park went on for 30 years and it was finally fully built and finished in 1845. After that a well-known gardener called Eduard Petzold continued with the supervision of the park.
Apart from the park itself, the Muskau area is also notable for the Muskau Castles. There are two Muskau Castles in the area. One of the Muskau castles is called Old Castle and the other Muskau Castle is called the New Castle.
Since 1945 Muskau Park has been divided by a state border between Poland and Germany, with two thirds of this border on the Polish side. A more remarkable date for Muskau Park was on the 2nd of July 2004 when Muskau Park was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That award is a prestigious honour for any park to receive and for Muskau Park to receive the award was a great day in the park's history. Although it took 159 years to receive this prestigious award, Muskau Park did finally get the recognition it deserved. 159 years is a long time to wait for an award, but when you consider that not many other parks have received this award at all then you begin to realize that it wasn't such a long time.
Muskau park is to receive all sorts of recognition from these awards to holding great events that can only be held in this park. At the end of May 2006 a set of meetings will take place in Muskau park called Culture 2000. Culture 2000 is a program that has been set up by the European Union to energize with the goal of the culture dialogue between all European countries. This will be when all people from all ages can attend the culture event. Young people, middle-aged people and even elderly people are all likely to attend this event where there will be workshop seminars and topic tables about the park.
As of April 2005 Muskau park opened a English souvenirs display that showed the time that Prince Puecklers was in England and some of the souvenirs that he obtained in his time there. This is a good way for German citizens to learn about how Muskau park came to be. Even though it is almost 200 years old, you can understand what was going through the Prince's mind at the time of his visit in England. You can see some carriages that the prince rode in when he was out and about. Also there are many other items of interest that will shine some light on the Prince's trip. If there is anyone that is interested in knowing how this World Heritage Park became to be then it is well worth the visit. The park may have the World Heritage Award, but many people will not want to see Muskau park, instead they would rather take the time to view the Muskau castles.
That is why that the Muskau castles are more noticed then the park because of the word of mouth style that will go around when people get home. They will say that the Muskau castles were a good place to visit whereas they may see Muskau park as a simple extension to the castles.
