Spam email is also used by internet predators to try and steal passwords and financial information as well. Sites like eBay and Paypal have had many issues in the past where malicious spammers have claimed to be part of those companies and have sent people emails asking them to confirm their account information. If you click on one of those emails you will have all of your information stolen and your life could turn into a living disaster. The best bet to be safe is if you get an email from a company that has your financial information never click on a link from the email to log in. Many companies that deal in financial information will not put login links into their emails for this very reason. Report the suspicious email to your financial company and only log in to your financial accounts directly through the website.
Spam can also happen on your favorite message board as well. Many less than reputable internet companies that usually deal either in selling online pharmaceuticals or trying to sell you financial services will have people out there creating accounts on popular message boards just specifically for the purpose of spamming the message board with advertisements. It used to be that the spammers could just use what was called in internet robot that was a piece of software that could sign you up for multiple accounts and spam multiple message boards at once. But in order to combat that message board owners now require everyone that sets up a new account to enter a code that can only be seen on the screen. To combat this the spammers now hire people to log into message boards and create spam accounts. It is amazing the lengths to which these sleazy parasites will go to just to put out advertising that literally 99% of the people on the internet want nothing to do with at all.
