The little town of Freeport was officially founded in November of 1912. Never the largest of towns, it doubled in size in 1957 when it merged with nearby Velasco Texas. Velasco is an often forgotten part of Texas's history and heritage. During the 19th century Velasco served as the very first capital of the Republic of Texas, and is an important part of the history of the Lone Star State.
Even older than the town itself is Port Freeport, which was built over one hundred years ago when the first jetty system was built in what would one day become Freeport Texas. Port Freeport is an incredibly important trading center for the state of Texas, and you will find plenty of activity going on here at Port Freeport any time you happen to swing by.
One of the greatest things about the little town of Freeport is of course the beaches. The Gulf of Mexico is well regarded as a great place for swimming, sunbathing and fishing. Its beautiful white sand beaches are world-renowned, and some of the best Gulf of Mexico beaches are to be found right here in Texas. Freeport offers up an astounding 3.5 miles of great and beautiful beaches.
Fishing is definitely one of the highlights of a Freeport vacation. There are numerous boat ramps and marinas that line the coast alongside the little town. You can even rent deep sea fishing party boats and take out the whole crew for a ride into the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf while you cast out your lines and try to catch any of the many species of fish that populate the area. Here at Freeport you will find hundreds of both offshore and inshore fishing spots available. You and the family can even hit the beach and enjoy the fun of surf fishing.
Birdwatchers are in for a special treat here at Freeport. Every year in the area the town hosts the Freeport Audubon Christmas Bird Count to see just how many different species of bird can be found migrating down here to the lovely area of Freeport to get away from the cold of northern climes. The Freeport Audubon Christmas Bird Count is award winning for the number of different birds that have been counted here and every year birders from around the state and the region travel to Freeport to see if they can spot the newest species of bird to arrive here in the area.
If you're into gold, Freeport boasts a lovely golf course. There are also plenty of parks and recreation areas that you and the family can spend time wandering around in. If you are looking for even more excitement, the city of Houston is just a short drive away, offering everything that the big city can muster up. Truly there is always more to explore here in Freeport Texas. It is a vacation getaway unlike anything you have ever experienced before.
